GRADE CRICKET

DUNEDIN BEATS OLD BAYS CENTURY TO J. YOUNG ' Saturday's senior cricket matches, which were played under vjery favourable weather conditions, were full of interest, and there were some surprising results. The biggest surprise of the season .so far was Old Boys' defeat by Dunedin, while both Carisbrook teains gave their poorest displays.. Older players were well to the fore, J,., Young (Dunedin) making a nne.'vcenturj', C. b\ W. Allcott (Kaikorai)'f dominating the scene at Carisbrook, ■''AVli;- Knight (Grange) making a sparkling y 4G, and It. Silver (Albion), reappearing after a long retirement, doing well with bat and. ball. There were, however, other creditable performances. The points gained by' the. 10 teams to datey.BSfi: as follows:—Old: Boys 32, Kaikofai 26, University 26, Albion-Y.M.G.A. 26, Air Force 21, Carisbrook A 21; -Grange 16, Carisbrook li 16, Dunedin 6, Nortu-east Valley 1.

A Big Surprise. When a team which is next to last on the list and is without a win to its credit scores a comfortable victory oyer the team which is leading in the competition, it may certainly be described as a big surprise. This is what happened ■at Tonga Park, when Dunedin's '22b for four wickets proved too much for Old Boys, who could manage only 176 for six. It was the solid first-wicket partnership of 203 by J. Young (120) and D, McDonald (60) which blasted Old Boys' hopes. These two openers scored faster than usual, and neither gave a chance. Young, who is in splendid form this season, hit two 6's and 16 4's. Groves took three wickets, but was treated with unusual severity, 72 runs being hit off him.. Old Boys began well, but could not maintain this advantage. Mills made a bright 62, with a 6 and eight 4's, Giles getting 31, MeKnight 23, and Fastier 17. Kruskopf, with four for 66, was Dunedin's best bowler. Allcott v. Carisbrook B.

Carisbrook B crashed badly against Kaikorai at Carisbrook, the "main factor in the latter's collapse being ail admirable all-round display by'O.nF. W. Allcott, who, after top-scoring with 49, made in graceful style, chiefly by clean, sweeping drives, captured seven Carisbrook wickots for 19 runs in 12 overs. Allcott swung the ball well, occasionally straightening one up, and four of his victims were clean bowled by his faster deliveries. Kaikorai batted first and began well though runs did not come, very rapidly. Later, when McGregor instructed his batsmen to speed up. the scoring rate improved, and the total when the time limit was reached was 159 for seven wickets. In addition to Allcott, L. Watt (33) and L. Stewart (30) made useful contributions, both batting brightly. R. Harwood, the left-hander, bowled particularly well and registered an excellent performance, taking six of the seven wickets for 59 runs in 16 overs. When the B's batted they made a .poor showing against Allcott and Fea, only one batsma.ii, McArthur, who made 1 15, reaching' double figures, and the side was all out at 5.35 for 53 runs. Fea's average was three for 15.

University Successful. Carisbrook A, like the club's B team, gave a weak display of hatting on the University Qva,l, and University had no difficulty in registering a first-innings win after compelling the A's to follow on. The students corhipiled;2ol' in their knodvßemiie getting 63; ; J3: MiirdSbV 38, McCoy 28, Toomey 25; and K'. Murdock 18. MoDougallj as usual, bowled with good effect, his five for 's3' being a fine effort in the circumstances. Stanley took two for 40 : and Cameron one for ley took two for 40and Cameron one for 28. Carisbrook comld muster billy 82 runs in reply (Cameron 29, Fraser 19) and, following on, it lost four, wickets, for 61 (Fraser 28. Gore 22): McCov five for 19, Rennie three- for 22 and two, for 19, Doig two for 37, D. Murdook two for 16 were the destroyers.

Valley in the Shadows. North-east Valley suffered* still another defeat when it met Grange on the North Ground. Batting first Valley made a slow 106 for eight wickets, McClintoek getting 25, Hughes 17, and R. Miller 16. In spite of this low scoring the Grange captain gave all his bowlers a turn at the crease, Elmes taking two for 24, Freeman one for 10, Mercer one for 13, E. Powell one for 13, and Knight.one for 14. Grange's batting effort was much brighter, A. Knight hitting five 6's in making.4o in 25 minutes. Tomlinson also got 40, F. Powell 22, Freeman'l9, and Elmes 19.. Hughes (four for' 34),, Mattihgly (three, for 43) and Olarke (two for! 41) were Valley's, best bowlers. Air Force Defeated.

R. Silver, formerly an Otago rep., who has not played in grade matches for some years, turned out for AlbionY.M.C.A., which defeated Air Force at the Oval, scoring 149 for eight against the airmen's 91. Deuchrass was top scorer for the winners with 30, Silver making 27 not out, and Carter 22. Larkins throe for 52 and Botting two for 22 were the chief bowlers for Air Force, for which Botting made 21. Silver was in evidence with the ball also, taking four widkets for 48, Allen getting three for 18 and Duncan two for 23. Lower Grades. Intermediate Grade.—Green Island 188 (F. Barnes 104, G. Berry 23; Wood five for 4.5, Moore three for 26) beat Carisbrook 150 (Galyn 83, Gree 13; G.. Berry four for 26, F. Barnes five for 48. Abercrombie one for two).
