CORRESPONDENCE
AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l would . like to compliment " Spencer" on his letter, which the might, however, have expressed m much stronger terms. If this natural and beneficial sport is to thrive in Otago the centre officials will have to modernise their methods or get out and let the cleaners in. Instead nt postponing meetings in view of approaching holidays, and so forth, let them organise meetings for. some finserving cause, or, as at time's in the past, for He'd Cross organisations. Give the sport.the biggest boost it's ever received. Radio announcements, posters, screen advertisements, and any, other ingenious method of informing the public of our needs should he used. If funds are short, let them approach some of our many wealthy citizens or firms for their financial support. Perhaps the Government could give some assistance through the New Zealand Sports Council. Every effort must be made now, even a though there is a war in progress, to increase club membership so as to provide strong competition in view of the approaching centennial festival. The Caledonian goat track could also do with a brushing-up in many ways. Our dreary centre officials resemble a garden, which has not been weeded throughout the seasons, or is it that one or two of the stronger clubs, which have always been in possession of the doings and sayings in the vast, wish to keep their hold on things at the expense of the sport Maybe they are ignorant of a growing discontent which is prevailing at the present time. —I am. etc. Navy and Scarlet Runner.
