WATERFRONT WORK

AUSTRALIAN IMPRESSED wITH N.Z. SYSTEM The Minister of Labour (Hon. P. C. Webb) stated this morning that, on account of the very serious stoppages in waterfront work in Australia, Mr Tim Healey, Australian Waterfront Workers' Union secretary, visited New Zealand to study the system in operation in this country. After meeting the waterside workers of New Zealand in various conferences and witnessing the manner in which the work was carried out here, Mr Healey said he was not at all surprised that New Zealand was practically a strike-free country. He was so much impressed with the New Zealand experiment in waterfront work that he was recommending to the board in control of the waterfront in Australia that an independent commission should be sent to this country in February to make an exhaustive study of the method of work. Mr Webb added that he believed that the manner in which the work was done and controlled on the waterfront in New Zealand was an example to other parts of the world.
