Y.W.C.A. DIRECTORS

At the monthly meeting of the Y.W.C.A. Board of Directors the following officers were elected: —President, Mrs R. W. S. Botting; vice-presidents—Miss Frances J. Ross,, Mrs F. Derek-Smith, Miss H. Wilson; hon. treasurer, Miss K. Standage; hon. minute secretary, Miss G. Farnie; National Board members, Mrs C. M. Begg and Miss H. Wilson. On behalf of the members of the board Mrs Begg thanked the retiring president (Mrs J. R. Fairbairn) for her services to the association during her term of office.

The resignation from the board'of Mrs E. M. Young was received with regret. A letter of thanks to the association for kindness during her visits to Dunedin was received from Miss Jean Campbell, National Youth Director, who has gone to the United States of America and Canada for a short refresher course. Members agreed to give donations towards a gift for Miss Campbell as a token of appreciation of her Nervices to the association in Dunedin.

Mrs Begg announced that it was hoped that Miss Margaret Dunning, of Toronto, the recently-appointed physical director to the Y.W.C.A. in New Zealand, would reach New Zealand before Christmas. News from the national office stated that the hew hostels at Richmond road, Hutt, were to be opened shortly. A report was received from the national office on the study of the effect of the war on the lives of women and girls which had been undertaken by the associations throughout. New Zealand, and discussed at the recent Y.W.C.A. conference in Christchurch. Plans for the World's Week of Prayer and World Fellowship were presented by the World Fellowship Committee, these including the sunrise service on November 14, a special service arranged by the hotstel residents, a members' gathering to be held ,oh November 18. A special world fellowship evening .was being arranged by Hie club girls. The leaflet for the week of prayer, entitled ' Eternal Certainties,' and prepared bv the World's Office of the .Y.W.C.A. and the World Alliance of the Y.M.C.A., was distributed among members. A sub-committee was appointed to consider applications for the vacancy in the Milton Hostel. The financial'statement for the month was presented by Miss Standage, hon. treasurer, and accounts amounting to £392 were passed for payment. The hostel report stated that there were 49 girls in residence and 11 transients, while 90 transients had stayed for varying periods during the month, these including 35 members of the forces.

Miss Lanham, reporting for the house and cafeteria department, staled that the Advisory Board had recommended that alterations to the cafeteria kitchen be carried out. It was decided to close the cafeteria for the month of January to enable this to be done. The secretary's report slated that gifts of eggs and jam had been received from South Canterbury friends. and that several visitors to Duncdin had made use of the hospitality of the association.

The Secretary reported that the working of overtime for several nights in the factories was affecting the attendances on club uights. Miss 11. Wilson presented the report from the health and recreation department., which stated that the Y.W.C.A. I. team had won the Basketball Championship Cup and also the Walker and Hall Challenge Cup. The No. 11. team had gained fourth place in the Otago competitions. Y.W.C.A. players had been well represented in the Otago representative teams. Basketball matches had been played with visiting teams from Milton and from the Christchurch Y.W.C.A. -The Cycle Corps continued to meet fortnightly. Baseball practices were being held, and the season for baseball and for the Tennis Club would open on October 30. Misses E. Ferguson and M. Marshall represented the sports girls at the Y.W.C.A. Conference.
