MR A. H. COURTIS

The death has occurred at Invereargi]l of Mr Arthur H. Courtis, who for. i 24 years was a member of the Southland Rugby Union, and for 21 years was treasurer, a position he held at the time of his death. He was a former vice-president of the New Zealand Rugby Union His interests extended also to boxing, athletics, and bowls. He was assistant manager of the Otago Univerity Rugby team which visited New South Wales in 1905, and 20 vears later was co-manager, with the "late Mr Arthur Geddes, of the Southland Rugby team which toured New Zealand. The late Mr Courtis received his education in Dunedin, where he excelled ' in mathematics at the Otago Boys High School. After three years at Otago University, he was appointed assistant gas engineer to the .Dunedin Corporation He joined the staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Ltd., and served as agent at Bluff from about 1906; afterwards removing to Invercargill as produce salesman, tie continued with the firm for about 37 years. He was a member of tho Dunedin Cricket Club before going to Invercargill, and' for many years in Southland he gave his services as an umpire in cluh and interprovincial games. He was elected to the Management Committee of the Southland Rugby Union in 1920. and was appointed treasurer two years later, being elected president in 1926 and 1927.
