CHRONIC ALCOHOLISM
ABSENTEE PROBLEM IN AMERICA (Rec 8 a.m.) DETROIT, July 16, Dr Thomas Meyers, secretary of the American College of Neuropsychiatfists, told the college that chronic alcoholism was one of the major causes of absenteeism from war plants and second only to syphilis as America's greatest health problem. He estimated that there were more than 1,000,000 chronic alcoholics in the United States, and the number was 60,000 a year. Adequate clinical and hospital facilities for alcoholism were almost completely lacking. Alcoholism was a disease, not.a crime, and prevention by health education for the young was more important than a cure. . • . .-
