TRIBUTES TO PIONEER WORKERS A <; family party" of past and present students, cbmmitteo members, lecturers, and friends of the Presbyterian s Training Institute gathered at St. Andrew s Church Hall in Dunedin on July 8 to celebrate the fortieth birthday of the institute. 'Thirty-three past students were pre- '" Tlie" convener of tho Institute Coprmittee, the Rev, R. S. .Watson, conducted a short thanksgiving Service, and the Rev. 0, M. Sullivan offered a prayer of commemoration for the members of the institute and its work. The Right Rev. J. G. Laughton, in an address, expressed the opinion that the greatest days of women's work were only beginning, and the work wae going to be tremendously increased in the years to come ... , Mr Watson referred to the pioneer work 6f the late Mrs H. H. Driver, and, after recalling the inspiring. work of the superintendents (Mrs Blackie, 1903-19; Sister Margaret, 1919-29; Miss M. Salmond, 192942; Miss P. ,1. Ross, 1842; and Miss D. M. Arrowsniith, 1943) and of the conveners (Professor Hewitson, the Revs. G. Miller, G. H. Jupp, and H. H. Barton), spoke of the one member of the committee whose work had been continued during the 40 years. This was the treasurer, Mr W. H. Adams. , ~ Mrs Blackie then presented Mr Adams with a blue leather album, containing an illuminated address, photographs or Uie four principals, and the signatures of 110 past and present students, and of the committee members. She thanked Mr Adams for tho great assistance ho had given the institute.- "He has his reward," she said, " in knowing the great work that is being done by the women who have gone out from the institute." After afternoon tea short speeches were given by tho three principals who were present—Mrs Blackie, Miss M. Salmond, and Miss D. M. Arrowsmith.
