WAS ROMMEL SHOT DOWN?
GERMAN UNDERGROUND RADIO REPORT FLIGHT TO SICILY INTERRUPTED LONDON, Julv 14. ' The German underground radio station states that Field-Marshal ißommel was shot down by Allied fighters yesterday while flying to Sicily to assume command there. ' (Router's Stockholm correspondent says that the newspaper ' Sv'enska Dagbladet,' giving this information, says that Rommel was travelling in a transport plane under strong fighter escort, and was accompanied by German and Italian staff officers.
A Malta despatch yesterday reported that Spitfires shot down a JU 52 transport plane escorted \by more than 30 German and Italia-n'. fighters over the .Sicilian coast. Six of the fighter escort were also shot down in flames.
