A CANADIAN'S IMPRESSIONS
LIFE IN NEW ZEALAND The. striking resemblance of New Zealanders to Canadians and the feeling .-of being at homo in New Zealand were emphasised by Squadron-leader 6. .T. Mitchell, of Canada, speaking to the Travel Club in the Savoy this morning. He gave some amusing impressions of life in New Zealand, where in the. cold south, he .said, "tea must be drunk seven times it day im '.order':!-.to keep up internal warmth. The Canadian people, said Squadron-leader Mitchell, had. the samo Knglish, Scottish, land Irish forbears as the New Zealanders, bilt there were also French ancestors in the east, people from the small Central European countries hear the Rockies and Japanese on the western coast. He was glad to say that all the Japanese had been rounded up and: were now working on. the Trans-Canada Highway. An-account of the development of music in Montreal in schools, churches, and symphony orchestras formed an interesting part "of the squadron leader's talk. In winter, 100 symphony orchestras, he said, | gave regular indoor concerts, while in sum- | mer, on the top of Mount Royal. I,oooft above the city, audiences of 10,000 to 12,000 were able to hear fine orchestral | programmes in an outdoor theatre. Spring . musical festivals, in which choral singing j and orchestral music were conducted by famous guest conductors, like Leopold Stokowski and Sir Thomas Beecham were a regular feature of life in' Montreal. Guests welcomed to the club by Mrs Richard Hudson were a party of', Airerican marines and Flying-officer Max. Wilson.
