SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) Obituary.—The death took place at Mil* toil ■on Thursday afternoon of a very old resident of the town in the person of Mrs Mary Westell Marryatt. She was a daughter of the late Mr and .Mrs R. W. Capdtick, and was born in Liverpool, England, just on 88 years ago. When she was three years of age. the family arrived in Melbourne, and four years later c&me to New Zealand and settled in Milton, where Mr Capstick was proprietor of. the TtVhite Horse Hotel for some years. In 1878 Miss Capstick married Mr Harry Martin Marryatt, Who had arrived in Milton 10 years earlier, and was f employed as bookkeeper at McGill's flour mill.: She had;lived in Milton fever sin.ee, and for the past 67 years had resided in the same house. Mrs Marryatt was a lover of music, and for 40 year* was organist at St. John's Anglican Church, iu which she was keenly interested until a few mpnlbs ago. She was present at the dedication of. the church by Bishop.Selwyn in 1866, and was the oldest surviving member of the church present at the laying of the. foundation stone of St. John's Hall in 1897, -while she was the guest of honour at a party given to old members of the church, at the severity-fifth anniversary in 1941. At this function she was presented with an illuminated certificate in recognition of her long services. Her husband died suddenly in June, 1908, arid she is survived by two sons and five daughters. ■■'''■''.

Football. Toko, and Clutha seniors ■played at Balclutha on Saturday, the result being a win for Clutha by 12 points to 6 points. For Clutha Smith, Duncan; Brown, and Reynolds scored, while Smith and Paul scored for Toko. Crescent had an easy win over High School. Other games were put off owing to the state of the grounds. Next Saturday's draw i Crescent L v. Toko 1., at Kaitangata; Clutha I. v. Clinton,'-at Clinton; Crescent and Clutha juniors at Balclutha; High School and Toko, juniors, at Milton. Golf,—Owing to the links being under snow there was no golf played at Balclgtha on Saturday, The' Weather.—The weather in South Otago during the past week has been decidedly wintry. There was a fair fall of enow, and on Friday night a very hard frost was experienced. On Saturday morning a thaw set in, with the result- that there were numerous burst taps throughout the town, and plumbers had a bus'v time. In some cases water was not available tjil well on in the day. A number of accidents through people slipping are also reported, one elderly man at Clutha Valley breaking a leg, while a woman broke.an ariii, and two children dre also reported to have had their arms broken. Sunday saw an improvement, -the day. being bright and sunny. Statistics.—Vital statistics,for Balclutha for June were: Births 7 (1942, 14), deaths 12 (5), marriages'2 (4). Milton: Births 4 (9), deaths 1 (4), marriages 1 (1); Halfyear: Births—2l (28), deaths 9 (15), marriages 5 (7). Rainfall: Balclutha, 2.16jn <.sbin); Milton, 2.68 in (.59in); half-year. 12.24 in m.6Bin).

Personal.—Prior to returning to camp, Driver Allan Henderson, of Milton, -was waited on by the mayor (Mr W. J. Cockburn) end presented with a monetary gift on behalf of the citizens. Private A. N. Whytock was met by frjeilds and presented with monetary gifts on their behalf and also on behalf of the Tokoiti, soldiers* committee, he also received a number of tokens of goodwill from friends.—On his retiring from the employ of Milburn Lime Company after 35 years', service, Mr Joseph Krcft. was presented with a fireside chair from his fellow-empldyces, and beet wishes were extended for his future years.—Mr J. Page, who hafe been surfaceman at Clarksville for the past few years and who is removing to Kvans Flat on promotion to ganger, was met'by & representative gathering of railway men, and, presented with a copper coal box as a token of esteem. Rife Shooting.—The sinnual meeting of Balclutha Miniature Rifle Club was held on Monday night, Mr R. McßHdc presiding over a large attendance. The annual report made feeling reference to the death of Mr Dick Arbuth'ndtt, a foundation member, who met his death in tragic mariner while on manoeuvres in the North Island. The membership showed a slight decrease, while the balance sheet showed the finances to have improved, the credit baing £W 19s 9d. The standard of shooting was high. The competitions' resulted:—Championships: Men—v\ grade. C. Falconer; B grade, G. Tosh;; C grade, R. Mason. Indies—A grade, Mrs Howie; B grade,' Miss Tosh. Aggregates: Men—A grade, C. Falconer; B grade, G. Tosh: C grade, R. Mason. Ladies—A grade, Mrs Watson; B grade, Miss To*h. Tho election of officers resulted:—President, Mr J. Barclay; senior vice, Mr W. Sloan: junior Mr J. Lowe; joint secretaries, Miss Soper and Mrs Crossman : auditor. Mr L. Allan ;'• club captam. Mr, H. Sinclair; deputy, Mr G. Tosh; committee—Mesdames Watson, Barclay, Miss Fryer, Messrs R. Mcßridc and R. Chalmers, it was decided that tho season conttnup till October 18, and that the usual competitions be held. Practice shoots will be allowed if members provide their own ammunition. After the meeting members took part in a shoot, and supper was provided. Top scores in the men were A. Mann 78. G. Sinclair 78, L. Bell 77, R. Arbuthnott 77, H. Sinclair 76, A. Plew 76.
