DEFECTIVE WELDING
SABOTAGE IN U.S. SHIPYARDS WASHINGTON, April 16. The arrest of seven men formerly employed as welders on charges of sabotaging Liberty ships being built at the Bethlehem shipyards was announced by the Federal Bureau of Investigation director, Mr J. E. Hoover, who said that the men admitted performing faulty welding to finish the work hurriedly and earn more money. He added that there was no evidence of Axis direction. Many improper welds were in vital parte of ships, and they could only be discerned with an X-ray. The extent of the damage is not yet known, but many structurally weak ships would have gone to sea if the defenctive welding had not been discovered.
