avoid. Of the players, Brian Donlevy takes the title role, a sympathetic one, even though it is that of a jewel thief. Miriam Hopkins has the very difficult part of a mother who prefers excitemont to the caro of her daughter. Preston Foster as the detective does more than track down criminals. Many tense moments are depicted throughout the picture, but there are also several particularly hilarious scenes. An important Dart "of the play is bound up in a New Year's Eve celebration in New York in 1923. This tale of a daring jewel thief will hold wide interest. ' STATE The-comedy team, the Crazy Gang, provides endless humour in 'Gasbags,', the new attraction at the State. In contrast to the many war pictures, this film turns the European situation into a background of riotous farce. Digs at Hitler and his doubles are not excluded from this merry story, not to mention jibes at the Gestapo, the concentration camp buffooneries, and the skits on the Fuhrer and Goering, to quote some of the fun of this hilarious film. The stars are six of the most popular radio and screen comedians, Nervo and Knox, Flanagan and Allen, and Naughton and Gold. ST. JAMES The romantic drama, ' Waterloo Bridge,' will be seen again this week at St. James. . It is a simple, human story of two young people desperately in love and caught in the merciless web of war when a ; lifetime often must he telescoped into 24 hours. Its stars are : Vivien Leigh and Robert Taylor, reunited for the first time since they appeared together in ' A Yank at Oxford.' The characterisation of Myra brings Miss Leigh a new sweetness and charm, and the chance to display hidden facets of her fascinating personality. As the hero, Roy Cronin, Taylor has been given the most mature and dynamically virile characterisation of his career. The transition from the young officer in love to_ the self-contained man Hearing middle age gives him greater scope than ever before. It is a role ideally suited to Taylor, and puts him badk in uniform for the first time 6ince his college role in ' Journey's End ' brought him to the attention of Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer talent scouts. STRAW The tense atmosphere of the Orient with all its exotic adventure is created in Warner Bros.' new film, ' Passage from Hongkong,' one of the features ' on the new. Strand programme. Keith Douglas, in the role of an author of mystery stories, and Lucile Fairbanks, as one of the thousands who seek passage from Hongkong because of. impending trouble, are the leading characters in this unique mystery film. I Keith is arrested and' accused of murder | when a British officer is found stabbed I to death by a knife that had been-given to Keith as a gift. In his effort to ex- # plain how he came into possession of the '- knife, he becomes more deeply involved. Miss Fairbanks decides to stay until ha is cleared of the. crime. After many a harrowing experience, of .both Keith and Miss Fairbanks, the crime is : solved, and results in one of the most surprising climaxes ever filmed. The second, feature is .'Moonlight in 'Havana,' a breezy,, swift-paced entertainment seasoned with gay music, dancing; and ■romance'../ ■ /■;•--.•' ..• ■:. >' : GRAND A sensational espionage drama of the last war, ' I Was a Spy/ heads the current programme at the- .Grand, .with Conrad. Veidt, Madeleine Carroll," and Herbert Marshall in "the main roles. The ' story deals with the actual adventures of Marthe McKenna, a Belgian spy, who, working as a nurse in a German base hospital, makes use of her position to obtain information. She is arrested, but escapes after being sentenced ta death. The associate feature is 'Ask a Policeman,' with Will Hay, Moore Marriott, and Graham Moffatt. Hay . gives an outstanding performance as a village policeman who has not made an arrest in TO years, but finally gets, on the track of a band of smugglers. A hilarious chase ensues before, the irrepressible comedians round up th« crooks. EMPIRE 'The Spoilers,'' the best-selling ,- novel of Rex Beach, had been dramatised, and the picture of the : same name is now current at the .Empire. Vivid and breathless, probably nothing is more descriptive of the film than the line from Kipling -which reads—- " There's never a law of Man or God • holds north of '53." The mad rush to the Klondike, the primitive lust for gold, the roaring era of '9B; these provide thrilling material for the screen. Cherry Malotte, the shrewd, seductive, beautiful operator of Nome's most glittering gin-palace, is the role Marlene Dietrich was born to. play. The portrait is ably backed by the virility of her co-stars, (Randolph Scott and John Wayne. In a reversal of his customary leading man roles, Scott this time is the suave, crooked gold commissioner. The picture moves fast and furiously. Action, drama, and romantic excitement embellish the basic premise of two men fighting.;and ready to die for the love or a' woman and for possession of the Midas mine. • William Farnum, star of the original ' Spoilers,' is again seen, this time' aa the lawyer W'heaton. The cast is a pretentious one, and incidentally, deserving of note is the first screen appearance of (Robert W 7. Service, poet laureate of the Alaskan gold rush and author of ' The Shooting of Dan McGrew.' MAYFAIR Heading the new programme to be shown at the May fair to-day is 'Penny Serenade,' a human story of marital friction, with Gary Grant and Irene Dunne in the main roles. The story deals -with the courtship and marriage of a newspaperman, the girl being no more prepared than he is for the responsibilities of married life. After their early misfortunes they view life more seriously and eventually they find real happiness. The supporting film is 'Great Guns,' -with .the comedians, Stan Laurel arid OliverHardy in a number of hilarioui escapades.
