COMMON COLD AND INDUSTRY
PRINCIPAL CAUSE OF ABSENTEEISM IMMUNITY MEASURES VALUELESS Prew A*soci*tion-Bj Te"le g r*ph-CopynrM NEW YORK, March 27. The common cold is the principal reason for absenteeism in war factories, and causes a loss of 90,000,000 work days a year, says the ' Wall Street Journal.' The only effective control methods are ultra-violet light and spraying with popylene glvcol vapour, but, because of the difficulties and expense, such protection for the public is about as illusive as a ticket to Shangnla. The newest medical holds that prophylactic vaccines administered orally or hypdomerically are for those with sufficient natural immunity to resist colds. No so-called abortive treatment designed to shorten a cold accomplishes anything. The. inordinate consumption of fluids or laxatives finds no scientific support. A rest in bed sometimes prevents complications. In the absence of specino virus, chills or fatigue do not cause colds.
