Borough Council. At Wednesday night's meeting of the Milton Borough Council Mr George Melville was appointed! to fill the vacancy on the council caused bv the resignation of Cr H. G. McClymont. The council decided! to ■support the proposal that all activities. of municipalities be declared essential.' A sub-committee wa6 set up to draw up a schedule of work that could be undertaken by the council in assisting returned soldiers. The financial statement showed a debit balance of £751 4s 2d, after paying the monthly accounts. For the nine months ending December 31 ■ the expenditure exceeded receipts byr £2,784 14s 6d, while three-quarters of the ratesV struck were yet 'to he* paid'. The; .GhajrMiW oi the: jGomniittee stated that the" financial ~ position was quite good. ■ It was left to the Works Committee to the possibility; £of procuring a suitable gravel pit for the supply of gravel for the borough requirements. : -\. Hospital Board.—At , this week's meeting of South Otago Hospital Board the financial statement showed a debit balance of, £4.364 5s 9di at December 31. Mr. D. McGregor again voiced his protest against the present method of dealing with hospital accounts, and gave notice of motion to move at next meeting that the board revert to .the previous system whereby the accounts were dealt with bv the whole board and not by the chairman and "one, member. Mr W. J. McKenzie. who has: been a member for many years and is also an ex-chairman, wrote resigning on account of ill-health. The resignation was accepted with regret. The Clutha County Council is to be asked to fill the vacancy. Late Frosts.—During the past week fairly heavy frosts have been experienced, in parts-of South Otago, and as a result potato crops . have suffered* Fortunately, the potatoes have been well advanced, and despite the facfe that the tops are blackened and withered the ...tubers will not suffer .to the extent they would! have otherwise. Beans, both broad and.runner, tomato, and marrow plants have also received, a severe setback. Frosts at this, time -of the year are most unusual in this district.
