Mr J. L. Passmore left for Wellington this morning. Mr H. C. Hassall, formerly of Dunedin. has been elected president of the Canterbury Employers’. Association. Mr Peter Heywood Macdonald recently retired from the service of the Union Steam Ship Company after an unbroken period of 41 years at sea in the company’s vessels. This is believed to be a record for the mercantile marine of tile Dominion, and is certainly one in which pride may be taken. Mr Macdonald was born at Port Chalmers in 1878, and was educated at Dunedin. He served his apprenticeship in mechanical engineering with the firm of Messrs Morgan, Cable, and Co., of his native town, and commenced his sea career in 1901 with the Union Company as fourth engineer of the Whangape. In 1911 he was -prorated to chief engineer of the aKituna. and from that date until his retirement he served in a similar capacity in no fewer than 28 vessels of the company’s fleet, including the Manuka, the Mararoa. Moana, the Moeraki, and the Alokoia. He was chief engineer of the Waikouaiti when that vessel was wrecked on Dog Island in November. 1939. Mr Macdonald has been a member of the New Zealand Institute of Marine and Power Engineers for the past 40 years. He resides at St. Leonards. Mr and Airs E. J. Hardman, of Mount Cargill, have received advice that their son Donald has becn_ promoted to the rank of -pilot officer in the R.N.Z.A.F.

This morning the fortress commander. Colonel J. G. Jeffery, on behalf of the area staff, made presentations of a hold-all and a dressing case to Mr J, G. Farmer and Air E. R. Jory, both of whom are leaving this week.to assume military duties. Both men volunteered for overseas service at the beginning of the war, but, failing to pass, they took over positions on the Drill Hall staff. Air Farmer 'being chief clerk. Records Office, and Air Jory» area paymaster. Colonel Jeffery congratulated the men on the* efficiency of their work and wished them well in their forthcoming O.C.T.U. course. Tributes were also paid by Alajor L. A. Rhodes, area staff officer. Lieutenant H. J. Aloynihan, area records officer, and Air J. Edmond, area clerk.
