(From Our Correspondent.) Women’s Institute.—Mrs Twecdie presided over Balclutha Institute. Motto. “ We’ll pass this way but once, any good we can do let ns do it now. Roll-call: A gift for the lepers resulted m good response. Miss Shirley Miller contributed delightful recitations. Mrs G. _ Innes gave a demonstration on ‘ Quilting, _ which proved very interesting. Competition winners: Miniature garden in bowl, Mrs J. Montgomerie; wheatmeal scones—Mrs Montgomerie 1, Mrs Sutherland 2. Mrs Mason gave the “ golden thread talk. P W M.U.—Milton P.W.M.U. held its annual sale of work this week. There was a good display of goods, and as a result the sum of £l6B 4s 5d was taken. This is £lO ahead of last year, and under present circumstances must be considered very satisfactory. , , , , Hospital Matters.—At ibis week s meeting of South Otago Hospital Board it was reported that the new maternity block at Milton Hospital was now nearing completion, and it was anticipated that it would bo ready for occupation in about live weeks’ time. Mr L. W. Potter (borough representative on the board) discussed board matters with the Milton Borough. Council on Wednesday night, and reported that tho new ward was almost ready, and had been completed in 16 months, despite the many hold-ups through no fault of the board’s. Tho council discussed tho P9SI- - regarding only one medical man being allowed to treat patients in the Milton Hospital, and a deputation was appointed to wait on the board at next meeting with a view to having the position rectified. Footballers’ Ball.—Tho Clutha Football Club held a ball on Thursday night to raise funds to send parcels if club members overseas. Tho club has over 50 members overseas, while a largo number are in camp. There was an attendance of over 200 couples, the numbers being augmented bv a large detachment from a nearby camp. The camp orchestra supplied the music, and the ladies looked after the supper. Messrs R. Chalmers, H. Major, and G. Pincham were th© M.C.s, and the iiou was a very enjoyable and successful 011 c.
