SEVERE FIRE DAMAGE
FORMER U.S. SHIP MANHATTAN (Reo. 10.15 a.m.; WASHINGTON, Sept. 9. The Navy Department announced that the transport Wakefield, 24,000 tons, formerly the liner Manhattan, queen of the United States merchant licet, was severely damaged by lire at sea on September .!). Sixteen hundred passengers and crciv were removed without loss of life. Several were injured. The cliarred hulk lias been salvaged and towed to an Atlantic coast port. The origin of the lire lias not yet been determined.
