According to reports by a Chinese war correspondent, rotting corpses and bleached bones are scattered about the streets, and the silence of the graveyard is interrupted only by the eerie chirping of insects. As the result of the scorched earth policy, the few remaining houses have been denuded of everything of value. The war debate in the House of Commons collapsed 50 minutes after Mr Churchill finished speaking. There were only four short speeches. Nobody among those who remained in the House seemed to desire to continue the debate, and progress was reported. The ‘ Daily Telegraph,’ in a leader, states: “Mr Churchill’s review gave the impression that the Allies have a definite combined strategy for winning the war. That is probably the main reason why the statement stilled! discussion.” .... The ‘ Daily Mail,’ in an editorial, states: “Mr Churchill’s reference to our sincere resolve to go to Russia s aid as quickly as possible is as vague as his previous recognition of the urgency of creating a second front in Europe in 1942.
