HONOURS AND AWARDS BRIGADIER FALCONER CREATED C.B.E. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, September 9. The following honours and awards, which His Majesty the King has been pleased to approve in recognition of gallant aifd distinguished service in the Middle East, were announced to-night:— COMMANDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE. Falconer, Brigadier Alexander Smith, of Dunedin. Brigadier Alexander Smith Falconer, who is well known in Dunedin, has a distinguished record in the war of 1914-1918 and ill (ho present war. Leaving with the main body of the Ist N.ZiH.F. in 1914 with the rank of sergeant, he tvas commissioned as second-lieutenant at Gallipoli in May of the following year, eventually becoming brigade major of the 2nd N.Z. Infantry Brigade in Prance, where he saw extensive service. He was awarded the D.S.O. «ud M.C., and was twice mentioned in despatches. On his return to the Dominion he continued to

take an interest in military training, serving with the Otago and Southland Regiments, the former of which he commanded for five years with the rank of lieutenantcolonel before being transferred to the reserve of officers. For some time he was engaged in farming in the Ashley Downs district, South Otago, and after he sold his property in 1932 he was employed for four years by the Yorkshire Insurance Company in Dunedin. Then he established himself as a retail, tobacconist at the corner of Moray Place and Princes street, and he was engaged in this 'business when he volunteered for service early in the present war. He left in command of an infantry battalion saw service in various theatres of the Middle East, and was promoted to the rank of brigadier. Brigadier Falconer is a foundation member and a past president of Toe H (Dunedin branch), and an executive member and past president of the Dunedin Returned Services’ Association.
