RELEASE FOR FARM WORK
OVERSEAS UNITS CANNOT BE DEPLETED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 9. The War Cabinet recently reviewed the whole question of the release of farm workers from military camps, and it has been decided that men attached to overseas units or the New Zealand Army Tank Brigade cannot be released unless there are very exceptional circumstances. Making this announcement to-day, the Minister of National Service, Mr Broadfoot, said the appeal boards, in considering the cases of men now being called up, would give a very careful consideration to a postponement where mobilisation would adversely affect primary ‘production. Regarding Grade I. single men between the ages of 21 and 41, special circumstances would, however, have to be shown before a postponement or release could be granted, even though the men might not be attached to an overseas unit. Obviously overseas units must be maintained at full strength, and single men as far as possible called up before married men.
