In the list issued on March 2 the name of the following soldier should have appeared under the classification “ Presumed dead, previously reported missing ”: — Sandbrook, Private Kenneth Joseph; wife, Mrs M. Sandbrook, Wellington. PRISONER TOTAL NOW 5,903 (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 6. The number of prisoners officially recorded cm Iho files of the Prisoners of War Inquiry Office is now 5,903, made up as follows; Army 5,725 Air Force ... 122 Merchant seamen and civilians .... 26 Navy ... 7 Miscellaneous 23 In addition there arc 64 unofficial notifications. It is stated that, correspondence is being received freely in New Zealand from prisoners-of-war camps in Germany, and examples of letters are given in the latest circular to next of kin. The office has received through the New Zealand Government advice that the Swiss Government has requested that no further inquiries regarding British subjects in Hongkong and tho Philippines should be addressed to it, as it is unable to take action, and it desires that all possible steps should bo taken to terminate the flow of inquiries to it. Tho office again advises relatives and friends that every avenue is being .explored to obtain information, but they must recognise the difficulty on account of there being no direct communication with Japan. The office, through the International Rod Cross, Geneva, has made cabled inquiries regarding all mailers affecting prisoners, the necessity for clothing, and for any information by which 1 they can be assisted from New Zealand.
