DESTINY OF FRENCH FLEET
VICHY CHIEFS STAND FIRM VAIN NAZI EFFORTS TO CALM CONTROL (llec. 11.35 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 9. Vichy has again refused to hand tne French fleet over to the Nazis, says the • Daily Mail’s • Madrid correspondent. At a secret conference recently between Admiral Raoder and Admiral Darlan Raeder attempted to gain full use of the French fleet and to use the naval and air bases in French North Africa.
Haeder argued that the world n aval situation had greatly changed since Japan’s entry into the war, and suggested that in an emergency the Vichy fleet might tip the scales in favour ot the Axis. Raeder refused to accept Darlan’s refusal of his demands, and insisted that Darlan should telephone to Marshal Retain, The Chief of State backed up Darlan, but the Germans have not yet given up all hope.
