Captain P. G. Monk, who has been on leave in Dunedin after two years on active service overseas, went north, this morning to resume his duties at Army Headquarters. Captain Monk was with the Second Echelon in England, and subsequently was engaged in the fighting in Greece. Advice has been received that Private John Bell, of the reporting staff of the ‘ Star,’ is safe and well. Sinu-* lar word has been received of Driver J. V. H. Stephens. Second-lieutenant A. Coughlan returned to Waionru on Thursday. Professor J. E. L. Cull .will retire from the Chair of Civil Engineering at Canterbury University College as frAia the end of next August. The Her. Dr McMaster Kerr, Van-* couver, British Columbia, of the'Presbyterian Church in Canada, has arrived in Christchurch, and will be the guesc speaker in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church for the next four Sundays. Mr Norman Annabel!, of the Wanganui City Council staff, has been appointed borough engineer at Te Aroha.The Rev. Sehvyn A. Grave, formerly; of Oamaru and Dunedin, has been appointed chaplain (Church of England)’ in the New Zealand Forces. Mr W. Parsonage, who for the past three years has been Director of Education in Tonga, has been appointed inspector of Native schools in New Zealand. Mr Parsonage will commence bis duties in Wellington in March. Captain 11. D. Stewart, who. has been harbour master at Wanganui for the last two years, has received a Royal Naval Reserve appointment. His duties as harbour master have been taken over by Captain F. G. Taylor,-, and Captain P. King, of Wellington, joins the Wanganui Harbour Board’s staff as acting pilot. Mr J. Short, New Plymouth,' has arrived in India to take up an appointment as a horticultural instructor. Mr Short left New Plymouth some time ago and continued his studies at Kew Gardens, London. He subsequently; went to Europe, and was engaged in Germany until shortly before the outbreak of war. A Press Association cable from Suva reports that the New Year honours included the 0.8. E. for Dr Cyril John Austin, medical officer at the Mabogait Hospital, and the M.B.E. for Mr John F. Grant, of Indian parentage, oi Suva. City Hotel guests include Mr A..
