POTATO SHORTAGE (P.A.I WELLINGTON, December 30. “ The shortage of supplies of potatoes was anticipated by the Internal Marketing Division,” Ihe Minister of Agriculture, 31 r Barclay, said to-day, “ and every possible effort "has been made to obtain supplies from Australia. The position there is much ■the same as it is hero. The supplies of old potatoes are practically exhausted, and the now crop is in short supply, with very few lines sufficiently mature to stand shipment, to New Zealand. The quality of the old supplies is not such as to warrant importation. It is expected that the market in New Zealand will continue to bo comparatively short until the main crop becomes available in Eebruary. In the meantime every effort is being made to make increased supplies available.” Mr Barclay mentioned that the Army demand in Australia was very heavy, and that during the last three months the New Zealand Government had imported 25,000 sacks of potatoes which Otherwise it would have had to obtain locally, thus intensifying the shortage in the Dominion.
