Ever since trawlers began working out of Otago Harbour fishermen must have cast covetous eyes at the stretch of sea beyond St. Clair beach. It is a backwater of the tide that should be rich in English soles and flounders; and there can be few rocks to tear up nets. But it is just too far away from Port Chalmers, and the five-hour run to Tomahawk has proved the longest so far travelled. To-day a trawler broke precedent by trawling there, and the ketch’s tall masts added interest to the usually unchanging sea. There is only one snag now—parts or the aeroplane which may one day work havoc with the trawl.
