A rather severe frost was experienced in South Otago on Monday night, with tho result that potato, tomato, marrow, and other crops received a severe setback, much to tho disappointment ot those who were anticipating their own potatoes for Christmas. Yesterday morning heavy rain commenced to fall, and • continued throughout tho day and last nigh.. As a result the low-lying flats between Dalclutha and Milton and in other parts aro covered with surface water. Farming operations have come to a standstill owing to the rain, while shearing has also been brought to a stop. The rain ceased early this morning, and to-day is bright and sunny. R.S.A. On Sunday morning members of Bruco K.S.A. and ex-scrviccmcn attended service at the Salvation Army. The members assembled at the soldiers’ memorial, and prior to marching off paid tribute to those who had “ gone west.” They wore extended a welcome by Captain T. McDonald, who also Welcomed Major Thomas and party from Dunedin. Special hymns wero sung, and Major Thomas delivered an inspiring address, taking as his subject the text “ If God be with us.” The parade, which waa in charge of Mr L. M. Scott, president of tho R.S.A., was well attended, and the service was much enjoyed. DALCLUTHA COURT. Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M., presided over the monthly sitting of the Balclutha Magistrate’s Court yesterday. John H Stevenson Ltd. proceeded against A. D. Cameron (Clydevale) for £5 11s 2d.— Judgment was given for amount claimed, with 32s 6d costs. Samuel Bews (Awamangu), for operating a motor trailer without a warrant of iitncss, was convicted and ordered to pay I2s costs. . Dorothy Gladys Stuart (Kaitangata) proceeded against Abater McDonald Stuart

(Dunedin) for orders for separation guaidianship, and maintenance for herself and child.—After heaving complainant an older •was made for tho payment of 15s per week for complainant, 15s per week for the child, complainant to have its custody. No separation order was made, and defendant was ordered to pay 21s costs. . Colin McKenzie (Dunedin), a commercial traveller, was charged on remand with on November 8, at being found in a state of intoxication whilc in charge oi a motor car in a place to which the public had access, a yard at the rear of Dajgcty s building in Clyde street. He was further charged that on tho same date he was found in circumstances that did not disclose the commission of any other offence in Dalgcty and Company’s yard. Mr C. J. for defendant, pleaded not guilty. Alter hearing evidence, the Magistrate dismissed both charges, holding that the yard was not a public place, and ihat a man who leased a bach shod from the firm had given defendant permission to put the car in the yatd ‘ BALCLUTHA SCHOOL. Despite tho heavy rain there was a fair attendance ab a mooting of parents ot pupils attending Balclutha Primary School last ni"ht to arrange for “ parents* day, to b* hold on December 11. The programme will include folk dances and drill, and items by the junior and senior choirs, while a number of stalls will be conducted, llicre will al'o be an exhibition of work done by tho children during the year, and baking competitions -for pupils of the primary and South Otago High Schools. UEADEP OF OPPOSITION. Mr S. G. Holland and party paid a visit to Balclutha on Tuesday. A meeting was held at 1.30. there being a large attendance, many having come long distances. Mr K. McCrcdie, chairman of the local National Party Committee, presided, and, m addition to Mr Holland, the speakers were Messrs J. A. Rov. M.P.. A. Gordon (Dominion chairman of tho party), and I'. Kelly (of Napier). The mcctin" was a very enthusiastic one, and Mr Holland was very cordially received.
