HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

PROMISING STANDARD REVEALED JUNIOR'S EXCEPTIONAL EFFORTS The annual athletic sports of Otago Boys’ High School, which were held at Littlebourne to-day, produced a high standard, and even allowing for the following breeze some of the performances were the best that had been registered in recent years, competition in each of the three championship classes being keen. The tracks were m good order, and though the breeze was a trifle, unpleasant at the start of the day’s proceedings conditions improved during the morning. The junior cup competition provided some outstanding efforts, more particularly onjhe part of last year’s champion, W. E. Mackintosh. This tall young athlete set a new record of 2rain 16 2-ssec when he ran the junior half-mile on his own on Monday afternoon, his time being 3sec faster than the old mark established by A. S. D. Geary in 1933. Mackintosh won the long jump with 18ft 9jin, Tin off the record. This was a fine performance, as the ground was on the soft side. He also won the 100yds most impressively in llsec, one-fifth of a second outside the junior record, and the 220yds in 25sec. G. R. Elder was a consistent performer in this class.

E. J. N. Carr, who ran so well at the secondary schools’ championship meeting last year, shaped promisingly in the intermediate championship, winning the 100yds in 11 3-ssec, and put up the fastest time in his heat of the 220yds, 25 4-sseo. He also came in a winner in the 120yds hurdles in 19 2-ssec.

Finality was reached in the competition for the intermediate field event cup, this being won by R. W. Phillipps with 6 points, A. Campbell being second with 5 points. Campbell registered a good effort of 18ft Sin in the long jump. The senior field event championship was won by L. A. Fraser with 10 points, B. Overton being runner-up with 7 points, O. J. Mowat being third with 2, and P. G. Lester scoring 1 point. Fraser did 18ft Sin to win the long jump, but the high jumping was poor, his winning height being 4ft Sin, though in a handicap event A. G. M. Passmore cleared sft 3in on Monday. Overton won iho 121 b shot putt with 32 ft.

The senior championship track events were well contested, and one of the best performances was that of R. B. Seddon (winner of fastest time in the school crosscountry race, last week), who carried off the mile decisively in the fast time of 4min 54sec. P. J. Robertson ran an excellent race to win the 440yds championship in SSsec, and A. G. M. Passmore went very well in winning the 100yds in 10 4-ssec. The 120yds senior hurdles was won by A. H. Pairmaid in 17 3-ssec. J. V. Ingram showed good all-round form, being third in the 100yds, 440yds, and 120yds hurdles. The events were put through smoothly and without hitch, the superintendent bejng Mr R. W. S. Sotting, Mr M. Watt being secretary, and Messrs J. P. Northey and A. J. Gillman starters. J. D. M'Craw and P Cressy, boys of the school, carried out their duties as Press stewards very efficiently. Results (juniors under 15, intermediates under 16i); — CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. 100 Yards, Junior.
