' Tk' .alisator tax in connection with the recent m"‘ ; ng at Wingatui amounted to £2,061 6s, dividend tax to £1,802 17s, ard stake tax £3l 3s; total £3,895 6s. Not Correct, A writer in the ' Mataura Ensign’ says: '• The starting at' Wingatui on Saturday loft a great deal to bo desired.” With the exception of one race Mr Gieseler has never done bettor work at Wingatui. Doubleacfc. Though he raced badly at Wingatui last week Dc.-übleaok is still to be a likely starter in the New Zealand Cup, and J. L. Strathcrn, provided he can do ' the weight, 7 10, has been engaged to ride him. Man's Pal. It is reported that Messrs Tirapany Bros, have received a tempting offer from a Queensland studmaster for the imported stallion, Man’s Pal, which they recently purchased from the estate of the late Mr G. A. Kain. Riding Engagement Announced. It is reported from the North Island that B. H. Morris has been engaged to ride Taurangi in the New Zealand Cup. In last year's race, in which this mare finished second, she was ridden by W. J. Mudforcl. Gate Receipts at Wingatui. The gate receipts at the Dunedin spring meeting showed a decrease of si.ghtly less than £SO on the first day, and an increase of about £lO on the second day, as compared with last year’s returns. £9 a Week for Stable Hands. . ,

The Racing Employees’ Association of America planned a strike at Hollywood Park, California, on July 10, if their demands fop higher wages from their employers were net granted. The association is composed of stable hands—they describe themselves as grooms —and they asked for 125 dollars (nearly £3B) a month. All sorts of things were threatened in the manifesto issued by the union, but the strike fell through. Many stable hands from all parts of the wcrld would probably hurfy off to California, if _ they thought there was any chance of getting £9 a week.

Indicators Not Popular. The future control of totalisator business in Southland is exercising the minds of honorary officials in the - province at present (says the ‘ Mataura Ensign ’). The decision of the Forbury Park Trotting Club to let its contract to a Wellington firm somewhat upset a scheme which was under consideration, but it is not likely that Southland clubs will follow the lead of the Dunedin club, which has rather earned a reputation for doing the unexpected. It will bo remembered that the Dunedin Jockey Club some years ago installed manual indicators as supplied by the Wellington firm which will run them at Forhury Park. They did not last long on that occasion and did not meet with public or official approval. Looking For Winners. What a pity it is that more people that are regular racegoers and are in a financial position enabling them to own a racehorse or two refrain from doing so. writes “ Pilot,” in the ‘ Bulletin.’ They may put a fiver or a tenner on nearly every race during an afternoon, but tho idea of racing something of their own does not appeal to them. They would sooner pester owners, trainers, and jockeys for information—f,»eik minor stable hands are not barred in their search. It may mean an occasional present, but that is cheaper than ownership. On a racecourse some men seemingly lose nil sense of dignity—if they ever possessed it. Tho other day I heard a trainer remark: “When yo'u have a horse with a chance it is amusing to note tho men who wish to rub against yon. Off tho course they would regard it as quite a condescension if they even gave you a nod. It would not be policy for mo to do so, but 1 often regret that I am not in a position to make a fitting reply when some of these individuals question me as to my chance of winning.” Beau Vite Backed For Caulfield Cup, Mr Ralph Stewart, Beau Vito’s owner, upset the equilibrium of betting circles on October 7 by commissioning Beau Vito for the Caulfield Gup when it had been assumed that the Melbourne Cup was his only handicap mission (writes a Sydney correspondent). Bookmakers were caught unawares, and the horse was backed straight out to such purpose that now ho is absolute fav-

ourilo for both cups, and at only half the odds in the Caulfield Cup of those on offer a week ago. Beau Vite has 9.12 in tho Caulfield Cup and 9.10 in the Melbourne Cup, being liable for rebandicap in tho latter race if he wins the first race. With tho possibility of a big field in tho Caulfield event and the mile and a_-half barrier very awkwardly placed at Flemington, Beau Vite may not be a gilt-edged proposition, for Rimveil, High Caste, Evergreen, and Lucrative are other high-class gallopers whoso best form suggests that they could set Beau Vile a very difficult task..
