AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY CLUB

LAUREATE ANNEXES DERBY ANOTHER WIN FOR BEAU VITE SYDNEY, October 5. Both ibis year’s Derby .and the Epsom at the A.J.C. Raudwick meeting on Saturday were fine races by reason of the uniformity of the class and the number of starters, and the fact that the public’s popular choice won in both instances. The Victorian representative, Laureate, justified anticipations by capturing the Derby in rather hollow fashion. Yaralla, although well fancied, and given every chance, disappointed by failing to stay the distance. Of the others, Chatham’s Choice shaped best, but Cloudy Bay was a failure. The Epsom Handicap produced a thrilling finish, with Rimveil snatching victory on the post from High Caste, whose weight just beat him. The redoubtable Beau Vite lived up to his great reputation by winning the Colin Stephens Stakes with a minimum of effort. Following are the results: — FIRST HURDLE HANDICAP, £250. About two miles. Royal Sceptre, 10.0 (Haynes) 1 Lithgow, 9.0 (Welsh) ... ... 2 Panama, 9.10 (Hamer) ... 3 Fourteen started. Punarua, who was always handy, looked like overhauling the leader, Royal Sceptre, at the home turn, but was beaten off to gain only third place two lengths and a-bal£ behind the speedy Lithgow, who finished a neck behind the winner. Generous Gesture was fourth. Time, 3min 39sec. TRIAL STAKES, £4OO. One mile and a-quarter. Red Pete, 8.5 (Bartle) 1 Lambeth, 7.12 (Badger) ... 2 Lo Dokes, 8.8 (Sliean) 3 Twelve started. Won by a long head, with two lengths between second and third. Time, 2min 3jsec. Patrician, who was well in the picture until the home turn, faded out and finished tenth. Dundalk was fourth. A.J.C. DERBY, £4,000. Ono mile and a-half. Laureate, 8,10 (M'Carlen) 1 Galliard, 8.10 (Shean) ... 2 Chatham’s Choice, 8.10 (Knox) 3 All started. Yaralla, Galliard, and Chatham’s Choice led the field to the five furlongs, where Laureate came from the next division. He hit the front at the Leger, where lie drew away and won easily hy two lengths and a-half, with a long head between Galliard and Chatham’s Choice. It’s Funny was a poor fourth. The remainder of the field was strung out, and Cloudy Bay was second last. Time, 2min 32sec.

EPSOM HANDICAP, £2,000. One mile. Rimvcil, 9.2 (Badger) ... 1 High Caste, 9.13 (Battle) 2 Amiable, 8.11 (Cook) ... 5 All started. The hot favourite, Freckles, dashed to the front from a good start, and opened up a four-length lead from Trade Mark, High Rank, and Algerian. The field closed up on Freckles at the three-furlong post, ■where Session and Industry were lying handy. High Caste then came through with a rush and got to the front. He looked all over a winner, but in a dazzling struggle to the post Rimveil bore down on him and gained the verdict amid prolonged cheering by a long head. Amiable was third, half a length away, and Tuhitarata was a close fourth. Then came High Rank and Merrimba. The much-fancied Evergreen was seventh, and Algerian eighth. Time, Imin 36scc.

COLIN STEPHENS STAKES, £1,250. One mile and a-half. Beau Vite, 9.5 (Munro) ... ... 1 Dashing Cavalier, 9.5 (Sheaii) ... ... .1. 2 Lucrative, 9.0 (M'Carten) ... ... 3 High Caste was scratched. Reading made the running to four furlongs, where Beau Vite. who was always close behind, took the lead. He was never troubled to win by one length and a-half. Lucrative was half a head behind Dashing Cavalier, who finished with great determination, and should come into prominence for the Metropolitan, Pandect’s fourth was just a moderate performance. Time, 2min 32Jsec. KENSINGTON HANDICAP, £4OO. Seven furlongs. Duke Cullen, 8.0 (Podmore) 1 Sethia, 9.2 (Davis) 2 Asnazu, 8.11 (Thompson) ... 3 Sixteen started, including Monte Cristo, who finished in the rear. Won by threequarters of a length and a length, Tetreen was fourth. Time, Imin 25iseo. , FLEMINGTON RAGES VELOCITY'S IMPRESSIVE FORM (Rec. 8 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 5. Velocity had the best Caulfield Cup trial this season, winning the Stand Handicap at Flemington on Saturday. Sir Locket was second, and will meet Velocity on s!b better terms in the Cup, but will find it difficult to reverse the positions. Contact surprised in securing third position. Saul and Yodvara ran fair races, but Carlton disappointed his Cup admirers. Panka had his third successive win in the Melbourne Stakes. It was an attractive effort, but the honours were with Elgolea, who finished brilliantly half a length behind. Rivette and Tranquil Star made disappointing efforts in , this race. All Love failed badly in tho Manifold Stakes, which resulted in a brilliant win for Primavera, who is now regarded as the best three-year-old filly of the season.

BEAU VUE MELBOURNE GUP HIS MISSION (Rcc. 8 a.ra.) SYDNEY, Oct. 5. Mr Stephen Buckley, the owner of Voilmond, bred Rimveil, who cost only 80gs at the yearly sales. He was very elated at winning the Epsom with tho first horse lie ever owned. He described Rimveil’s performance as marvellous. Ho was second last at the half-mile, gave High Caste, Australia’s best miler, many lengths lead in the last furlong and a-half, and then managed to steal a victory in the last-stride like a bolt from tho blue. Rimveil leaves on Wednesday for Melbourne and the Caulfield Cup, for which ho will be rehandicapped. High Caste’s connections believe lie was beaten ae a result of a colic attack the previous week, although he looked a picture before the race. He is l as big and burly as ever and is expected to make a solid bid for the Caulfield Cup. Mr Ralph Stewart has no regrets in scratching Beau Vito from the Metropolitan. A success in this might have given him a penalty to 10!b. “ I am so keen to win the Melbourne Cup that 1 passed over all other handicaps and am even unlikely to start Beau Vile in the Caulfield Cup,” ha said. Beau Vite leaves next week-end for Melbourne, and will probably be ridden in the Cup by Munro. Beau Vite has now won £24,340 prize money. The attendance at Bandwicb was near a record, approximately 80,000.
