Ellis has been engaged to ride Desert Maid in her engagements at the local spring meeting. He will also handle Carolyn and Overland Bed in their races. Doubleack. The Dunedin Cup winner. Doubleack,continues to record good work on the Invercargill tracks, and promises to start a very fit horse in the Churchill Handicap on Saturday. A.J.C. Derby. Phar Lap holds the time record for the A.J.C. Derhv at. 2rain 31isee. Laureate’s time, 2min 32sec, in Saturday’s race has only been equalled twice, by Salitros (1920) and Nuffield (1938). Rakanui. After winning tho Avondale Cup last month Rakanui was left at Auckland to fulfil liis engagement in the Mitchelson Cup next Saturday. He has been galloping well, and is likely to be one of the fancied division. Unpaid Fractions. During the 194041 season, ended on July 31, the total amount of unpaid fractions on the totalisator investments was £47.366. This works out at slightly over lid in tho pound invested, or 12s 9d in every £IOO. Royal Lancer. , The Southland champion, Royal Lancer, has not been right, since he raced under big imposts at the Dunedin winter meeting in the mud. Ho is to be given a good spell, and will not be a starter at the local spiring meeting. Taurangi. Despite her good second under a big weight over a mile at, the Hastings meeting. it is reported that her trainer, D. T. Marks, is doubtful whether Taurangi will stand up to the searching preparations necessary to win a New Zealand Cup. Made a Good Recvoery. Mr W. T, Hazlett. president of the Southland Racing Club, has made a satisfactory recovery after an operation in a private hospital in Invercargill, and was a passenger by plane to Auckland on Saturday, en route to Sydney. Methven Trotting Cup. ' Happy Man. who started first favourite each way in the Methven Cup. took cnarge after about sis furlongs bad been covered, and was not afterwards beaded. He registered 4min 25sec, a very fast go on a grass track. Engaged in the Stewards’ Handicap. Pay Roll, a winner of four races as a two-year-old last season, opened her winning account this season in an impressive manner at the Levin meeting. Pay Roll, by Croupier from Zarisce, a Paladin mare, is engaged in the Stewards’ Handicap.

McLean Stakes Candidate. At Invercargill on Saturday morning, when the track was greasy after heavy showers, the McLean Stakes candidate Carolvn ran three furlongs in 37 4-Ssee. She was going well at the finish, and this gallop draws attention to her in Saturday’s classic.

By Coronach. The first of the Derby winner Cororiaeb’s foalsi have arrived at the Cranleigb Stud, and one of them, a colt from Oratory, will be watched with interest. Oratory was a brilliant performer, and among her successes were the Great Northern Oaks and the Thompson Handicap.

Pedigrees of Placed Horses. Laureate, winner of this year’s A.J.C. Derby, is a brown colt by Law Maker (imp.) from Stage/Wit: Galliavd, a chestnut colt by The Buzzard (imp.) from Blue Skirt; and Chatham’s Choice a bav colt by Chatham from Spanish Victory. Laureate is owned by Mr R. W. McLean, of Victoria, and is engaged in the Victoria Derby.

Riccarton Two-year-olds. The track at Riccarton on Saturday morning was on the slow side after rain overnight. Several of tho two-year-olds engaged at the Dunedin meeting were sprinted. Foxltaven ran half a. mile in 54 2-Sscc, easily accounting for Grilse: Chestnut Glow, accompanied by Lord Dnmhfe, ran three furlongs in 38 4-ssec; Gold Branch took 41 3-ssee, and Trapeze beat, Prince Leighton in 38 l-sscc.

Indicator Totalisator For Forbury Park. It is reported that the committee of the Forbury Park Trotting Club has accepted an offer from Indicators Limited, a Wellington firm, to work the totalisator at its spring meeting next month. Instead of tho figures being shown on the totalisators. indicators showing the approximate dividends, both win and place, will be shown instead.

Promising Maiden. A novice that is well thought of in (he North Island is Iho Solicitor General filly Advocate. She was backed at tho Levin meeting, but missed the jump-out from the barrier am! was still last when the .straight was reached. A strong run landed her in sixth place. Her dam. Bee Acre, was bred by tho late Mr W. Higgins, and is closely related to Bean Vito’s family.

Stakes, Totalisator, and Taxes. For the season ended duly 31 last. £551,• 063 was distributed in stake? by racing and ti-oiliog clubs in the On—biion, a? nimoaiv. 1 with £563,097 in 193 q ’T and £550,054 in the 1953-39 season. The totalisator

handled £8,769,917 last season, as against £8,139,914 and £7,981,442 in the two previous seasons. Taxation paid on totalisator investments, dividends, and stakes amounted to £828,411 in the season just closed, as compared with £768,656 and £673,855 in 1939-40 and 1938-39 respectively. Last Year’s Winner. Enrich, last year’s winner of the Stewards’ Handicap, has been nominated for that race again. Referring to bis running at Foxton, “ St. Simon,” in the ‘ Dominion,’ says: “ Enrich should not be long showing a return to the winning list. He proved more than a handful for tho light boy who rode him on Saturday, and though •Pay Roll won with a good deal in hand, Enrich would have made it very interesting with a stronger rider aboard. Enrich is a candidate for the Shorts Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturdav.”
