TAIERI COMPETITIONS
FINAL SESSION The final session of the Taieri Competitions drew a large attendance at the Coronation Hall, Mosgiel. last evening. The principal attraction was the one-act plays. The balance of the programme was taken up with tap dancing, operatic dancing, recitations, and character sketches. The Bev. G. Densem presided. The following awards were announced:— Tap Dance, nine and under 12.—Miss Lorna Prattley 1, Miss June Tregilgus 2, Miss Doreen Read 5. Very highly commended: Miss Ngaire Holland and Miss Lorraine Stewart. Also competed: Miss Joyce Jolly, Miss Shirley Stewart, Miss June Stewart, Miss Buie More. Recitation, not humorous, 18 and over. Two competitors.—Miss E. J. Brew 1, Miss D. Wornall-Sraith 2. Operatic Dance, nine and under 12. Miss Helen Fraser 1, Miss Ngaire Holland 2. Miss June Tregilgus 3. Very highly commended : Miss Buie More. Also competed ; Misses Yvonne Berland, Shirley Stewart, and June Stewart. Character Sketch, under 16. Recalls from Monday.—June Tregilgus 1, ALilma Lobb 2. A special prize was awarded to Miss Audrey Geary. Dance Duo, under 14.—Miss Shirley Stewart and Miss Juno Stewart 1, Miss June Tregilgus and Miss Doreen Bead 2. Very highly commended: Miss Barbara More and Miss Lorraine Stewart.
One-act Plays. Three were si aged, as follows:—The Mosgiel Players, ‘The Nurse in Charge of the Case ’ (E. P. Parr); Green Island Women's Institute Drama. Circle, ‘Mirror to Elizabeth’; the Mosgiel Players, ‘Lights Out’ (Walter Hudd). The judge’s (Mrs Anita Oliver) decision was given in favour of the Mosgiel Players No. 1, with Green Island Drama Circle second, and the Mosgiel Players No, 2 in third place. DANCING SECTION.
Mrs G. L. Martin (judge of the stage dancing) commented' on the competition. The outstanding section was the character dance. The characters were well portrayed and the froeking was extremely good. Referring to the tap dancing section, the judge said children must pay attention to time and rhythm. That was most essential. In the operatic section the children showed good training. A demonstration concert and prize-giving ceremony will be held next Thursday. In yesterday’s report the name of Master Billy Chambers was inadvertently included among the names of the competitors in (ho tap dance, under nine.
