THE SHINING CUCKOO.

TO THE EDITOa. Sir, —I read with interest in Tuesday’s ‘ Star ’ of the shining cuckoo’s note being heard in Dunedin for the first time that morning (September 30). I saw and heard this bird as early as September 17, in the shrubbery in our garden. There seemed to be a pair of them, as one answered the other’s call, although I only saw the one at a time. They remained here until Monday morning, the 29tfi inst., since which elate we have neither heard nor seen any signs of the birds. One cannot mistake the beautiful green plumage, with bronze head, nor the characteristic note.—l am, etc., M. A. Allan. Portobello, October 2.
