COLLECTION OF RAILINGS

BIG SWEEP IN BRITAIN (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, October 1. Iron gates and railings from undamaged buildings in Britain are expected by the Ministry of Works to yield 500,000 tons of scrap iron, and instructions have been issued to local authorities throughout the country to list all unnecessary railings in their district. Six weeks is allowed for the completion of these schedules. The urgency of the demand for scrap is.increased by the fact that shipments from the United States have ceased for the moment by mutual agreement. The public, therefore, is called upon to sacrifice railings. Only three reasons will save railings. First, public safety; second, unusual historic or artistic merit j; and. third.,, the confining of cattle. Railings around churches and cemeteries are not exempt. Already hundreds of tons, of railings have been removed from Government buildings, and 1,200 tons have been taken from Royal parks.
