GOLF NOTES

Otago. Although conditions were on a par with those of the previous week, the majority of the competitors returned better cards in the second qualifying round of the club championship played last Saturday. However, in comparison with last year’s aggregate, the standard of play was not as high. J. N. Lemon’s 75 was the best score of the day, and represented very sound golf. This gave him an aggregate of 155 (three more than in 1940), and placed him at the head of the 16 who qualified by a- comfortable margin of five strokes. Incidentally, he won the president’s trophy, which is decided on the best gross scores in these rounds. Next on the list were W. A. Mitson and J. A. M’Causland, who tied for second place with aggregates of 160. J. W. Trewern comes next with 161, the scores then ranging to 174 by J. W. M’lntosh, who fills sixteenth place. The handicap event played in conjunction with the second round resulted in a win for N. V. Farrell' with the good score of 84—14—70. The first round of match play will take place on Saturday, and some good games should be witnessed. During the week-end the third of the series of quarterly matches between Otago and St. Clair was played on Balmacewen, when the home club heavily defeated the visitors, winning all the four-balls and the singles by seven, games to one, the total for the day being 11 games to 1. Conditions were ideal, and St. Clair had to submit to superior play on the day. Otago now has two wins to St. Clair’s one in the 1941 series. In a friendly match played on handicap between the B teams of the two clubs, Otago proved victorious by 9 games to 3. St. Clair. The first qualifying round for the club championship, Dewar Cup (intermediate) and Junior Cup, were played on Saturday in a cold south wind. No player among the seniors played, to his handicap except W. D. M’Kenzie, who carded a meritorious 79 from the 8 mark. Three other players broke 80 —C. B. Wight 76, D. C. Bennie and P. H. Waller 78. Eight players qualify for the club championship and 16 each for the Dewar and Junior Cups. The best rounds in the Dewar, Cup were H. A. Gamble and E. J. Doogue with 85, E. A. Bolwell 87, and S. E. Crimp and J. Cardno 89. In the juniors, G. Burgess had the best score, a 91, followed by L. M. Satterthwaite 93, P. T. Wren, A. J. M’Ewan, and C. Penman 96A stroke handicap was played in , conjunction with the qualifying round, W. D. M’Kenzie being first in the A grade with 79 —B—7l, and H. A. Gamble and E. J. Doogue both with 85, less 10, tied for second. In the B grade G. Burgess won with 91—20—71, W. Tyson being second with 98 —24 —74, Belloknowes, On Saturday a flag match in two divisions was played, and this attracted a good entry. In the seniors, E. G. Hasell, with an allowance of 76 strokes, was the winner when he trooped the colours to within 10ft of the pin on the nineteenth green. T. A. Morland, with 74 strokes, also finished on this green, 12ft further away. In the B grade R. W. Haskell gathered the honours when he planted the flag' on the nineteenth ■ fairway with his eightyfirst stroke. His nearest opponent was Eric Berman, who finished 2ft from the eighteenth pin. The competition proved a triumph for education, the winners in both sections being school teachers, whilst the runner-up in the seniors is the chief inspector. The first round of a 72-hole medal competition for the E. A. Lucas Cup, open to members with handicaps not exceeding 16, was also played last Saturday, the leading scores being those of T. A. Morland, E. G. Hasell with ,61’s. A. I. Murray,- M. F. O’Sullivan 62's. W. Anderson 63' E. Berwick 64, R. A. Penman, H. V. Huntley, W. A. Race, and A. C. Rowe 65’s. The meeting of the Toko, and Belleknowes teams is always enjoyable, irrespective of which side wins. Last week-end the annual interclub fixture for the Huntlev Challenge Shield was played on the Belleknowes course, when the visitors failed to retain the trophy, the local club winning by 6 games. In handing over the shield, Hr F. Hoyle, president of the TokOi Club, congratulated Belleknowes on

their victory, and in reply Mr H. Huntley, club captain, expressed the pleasure the visit of the Toko, members gave his culb. Mr Cliff. Hitohon returned thanks for the hospitality extended to the Toko, players, and the services of the ladies were acknowledged by a round of cheers. Chisholm Park. The high wind was responsible for indifferent scoring in the current four-ball Stableford match last Saturday. The winners were. A. Umbers and C. Davis with a total of 63 points. The latter has been on the sick list for many weeks and it seems that his game has benefited thereby. Umbers has shown much improvement in his game of late and has been the surprise in the club championship. The Roarers’ Mug matches for non-qualifiers in the championships were commenced last week-end and produced some good games. The competition will be continued during the coming week-end. Competitors in the plate, a match introduced for first-round losers in the championships, showed in many cases far better form than in the major event. Next Saturday the annual match between the president’s and captain’s teams will take place. In former years all left-handers were automatically picked on the side of the president, J". M’Mullan, well-known Otago left-hander batsman, but on this occasion the procedure will lapse, for this year’s captain, X. Aubin, is, by rather a coincidence, also left-handed. The final of the knock-out cup in the week-end ladies’ club between Miss Hill add Miss Gore provided a fine game. Miss Gore took the lead early and with a bogey 4 at the long eighth (380yds) was 5 up. and turned 6 up. Miss Hill fought back and took the next three holes in a row, but lost the short thirteenth, and halved the fourteenth, and then went on to collect the fifteenth and sixteenth, after being dormy 4. Miss Gore reassumed her superiority and clinched an excellent match by winning the seventeenth. Macandrew Bay. The semi-finals for the junior cup played last Saturday provided very close and interesting matches, B. Whitburn beat A. Johnson 2 and 1. I. Whitburn proved too steady for S. Whitburn and ran out the winner 2 up. B. and I. Whitburn, who are still at school, are most promising young players and are to be congratulated on reaching the final. In conjunction with the cup matches, a single Stableford bogey was played and resulted in a win for A. Brown with a score of 8—9 —17 points, followed by G. White 10—5—15, I. Whitburn 6—9—15, H. Morrow 6—8—14. During the week the final of the Junior Cup was played between I. Whitburn and B. Whitburn. The play for the first nine holes was even going, being all square. Then I. Whitburn took the lead from his younger brother, winning the next four holes B. Whitburn could only halve the next and lost the fifteenth, making I. Whitburn the winner of the cup by 5 and 3. Port Chalmers. The semi-finals of the championships held last week-end were the outcome of very consistent golf, in many instances the players turning on scores which, in stroke play, would be considerably below their present handicaps. In the senior competition, last year’s champion, F. E. Hunt, went down to F. Roberts, who won 1 up. while Gordon Groves, who was playing his usual consistent game, was beaten by J. B. Quaile, who could not make a mistake and turned on birdies at practically all his winning holes.

In the juniors W. J. Maskell played his usual steady game to beat W. H. Batchelor, whilst A. t). Slrachan, who is only in his second season, was too good for L. Fountain and won 3 and 1. The final in the seniors is now between F. Roberts and J. B. Quaile, while W. J. Maskell and A. D. Strachan will fight out the junior competition, each being a 36-hole match. ... . , The result of the four-ball bogey match was a good win for T. M‘Carten and A. j. Shaw, who finished 6 up s
