SYDNEY’S GOLD SNAP
NUMEROUS ACCIDENTS ONE MAN KILLED AND THREE GIRLS MISSING Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright (Rec. 1.20 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 2. Gales, rain, snow, and sleet swept big areas of the State yesterday. They brought Arctic conditions to the southern highlands, caused extensive damage, stopped air services, blocked roads, and gave some inland districts a welcome soaking. During the height of the gale a number of homes and buildings in Sydney were unroofed and accidents were numerous. One man was killed and many other people were injured. The police are searching for three little girls, who, it is feared, have been swept down a stormwater channel in Auburn suburb. Parts of Newcastle were plunged into darkness last night when a 70-miles-an-hour gale tore down light and power lines, unroofed many sheds and garages, and shattered shop windows. Brisbane was swept by a record-break-ing galo which extensively damaged property. While a great part of southern Queensland is menaced by fire, Stantborpe is experiencing a heavy' snowstorm, followed by bail.
