AT WINGATUi THIS MORNING A slight shower before training operations commenced at Wingatui this morning did not affect the No. 1 grass track, on which all the fast work was done. Islay Downs had Raroa for a companion over a circuit, but there was not much pace on until after passing the seven furlong disc. The last six was run in Imin 24 3-ssee, and the last four in 55 3-ssec. Miss Sally was going better than Latest Song (Songbird—Pax) at the end of half a mile in 50 4-ssec. The former now looks more forward in condition than when sho raced at the Otago Hunt fixture. Silver Lily and Gay Lancer were sent over seven furlongs. The former, carrying more weight than sho will have in the Guineas, was going the better, and after running the first three furlongs in 38 3-Sseo completed the task in Imin 31 4-sscc Flagman is another horse that bears an improved appearance since racing at the Hunt fixture. He was let off with a mile at three-quarter pace. Taxpayer and the Paper Money—Last Note gelding finished together at the end of five furlongs in 62 l-sseo. His owner has applied for the name of Document for the Paper Money gelding, who has developed into a fine-looking three-year-old. Pink Dart acted as schoolmaster for an unnamed three-year-old in Didham’s stable m a run over half a mile in 54 2-ssec. The Gustavo—Saxophone filly accounted for Hoiho Tinopai over six furlongs, the last five taking 65 l-ssec. Monioere (H. A. Andcrton) schooled well over three hurdles with plenty of pace on <3ir Hugh (E. Leckio) and Night Scout (J. Richards) gave a good exhibition oyer three hurdles. The latter, who will bo nominated for the steeplechases at Trantham, was going the better at the finish. Mosgiel (P. Hcaseley) followed this pair over the first two hurdles, but had little pace on and did not jump well. set the main for half a mile bv running it in 48 4-5s6C after breaking 12sec for the first furlong. Connolly advocated the admission of the Press representatives to inquiries held by judicial committees. In doing so he said that the admission of the Press would ensure a general formality in the imposition of penalties. The publication of evidence was an advantage, and the secrecy in many cases was not fair to the men charged, to the club concerned, or to the public. In every walk of life the Press was the one medium to the public that would allay their fears. His remarks were strongly supported by Mr E. L. Husband, and it was decided to refer the matter to the Dominion Trotting Council,

A Likely, Light-weight. One of the light-weight candidates for the New Zealand Cup that in favour at the present time is Beau Gicl, a four-year-old colt by Beau Bore from Flying Mist, a mare bred by the late Mr J. P Buchanan, by Martian from the imported mare Trichas, by Thrush. Flying Mist was at one time owned in Southland, and is the dam of a fairly useful performer on southern tracks in Ardmayle. Beau Ciol started twice as a two-year-old without getting into the money. Last season ho started 21 times for eight wins and a dead heat, three seconds, and nine times unplaced. He won once over six furlongs, once over a mile, once over a mile and 80yds, three times over nine furlongs, and three times over a mile and a-quarter, his total winning stakes amounting to £1,005. Beau Ciel was bred and is raced by Mr B. J, Murphy, who has previously .won the

Hew Zealand Cup with Oratrix in 1928 and Cuddle in 1955. He has been allotted 7.4in the Cup. Royal Lancer, On actual figures it looked as though Royal . Lancer would head the list in the handicap for the New Zealand Cup, says the ‘ Southland Times,’ but with Bst 41b he is rated as only the fifth best horse in the field, others above him being Eakanui (Bst 81b), Gladynev (Bst 61b), and The Buzzer (Bst 51b). Unfortunately for bis connections and all lovers cf a good horse, Royal Lancer is very much “ under a cloud,” and unless he makes a recoyery from the side trouble which has afflicted him since the Grand National meeting, his racing days for this season at least may be at an end. The Remount Scheme. In referring to the remount scheme in Parliament on Tuesday, Hon. W. E. Parry, the Minister in charge, said that official reports showed that during the’ 1959-40 breeding season, 39 stallions were subsidised in the various remount districts and 790 foals resulted, the foaling averaging 59 per cent., which was a distinct improvement on the first year’s returns. The amount of the subsidy paid in the 1939-40 season was £5,123, of which £1,123 wiTs provided by the Racing Conference. In tho 191041 season 10 stallions were subsidised, the conference providing £l,llß. Southern Candidates for Wingatui. Tho' Invercargill course was inclined to lift on Tuesday morning after heavy rain overnight, says the ‘ Southland News.’ , Houbleack was sent over a mile, and was assisted over about the last six_ by Anglo-Irish. Both horses howled into ‘heir work in good style, and Doubleack completed the full distance in 1.49, the last five in 1.9 2-5, and tho fast four in 55 3-5. Tho first four furlongs were run in 53 3-5, and it was an excellent effort for both horses on the slow track.

The Dunedin Guineas candidate, Desert Maid, was assisted by' Musical Hail when running' four furlongs in 53 3-5, the first furlong in 13 1-5. Desert Maid slipped about a bit on the home bend, but did her work particularly well over the concluding stages. The M‘Lean Stakes candidate, Carolyn, moved away slowly from the half-mile post, and ran homo from the three comfortably in 40 2-5. She appeared to bo quHe at home in the going. The oilier M'Lean Slakes candidate. Macediono (Salmagundi—Honest Maid) bad Salford (Salmagundi—Patricia Holm) and the SolicitorGeneral—Lady Violet colt as mates in a sprint over three furlongs. Macedione and Salford cleared out from the colt and got to the finishing post in 39scc. Macedione handled the going well, and probably could have done better, while Salford also pleased.
