In the latter case they must be brief. Mrs H. G. Hall, Hamilton, is the guest of her sister, Mrs Raymond Kirk. Miss H. K. Lovell-Smith, who has been visiting her sisters in Christchurch, has returned to Dunedin. Mr and Mrs F. S. Boot, Auckland, are at present staying at the Grand Hotel, Miss Verona Fogg has returned from Mount Cook, where she spent a holidayin ski-ing. Mrs S. C. Sutherland, who visited Christchurch last week for the announcement of the engagement of her niece, Miss Nancy Nicholson, to Mr L. V. Bryant, has returned home. Mrs A. A. Fairbairn returned on Monday from a holiday in Auckland and Rotorua. Mrs H. A. Mills, of Waimate, is her guest for a few days. Miss B. M'Lauchlan has been appointed clerk of the Wyndham Town Board in succession to Captain M. C. Rice, who was killed in action in Crete. She will take over her new duties tomorrow. Primroses and other spring flowers were used to effectively decorate the small lounge of the Otago Women’s Club on Monday, when Mrs F. Stables was hostess at a delightful afternoon tea party given in honour of Miss Viva Jacobs. News has been received that Elaine Hamill, the New Zealand girl who won success on the stage, was married recently to Mr Murray Campbell Scarlett, of Dundee, Scotland. Born in Hamilton, Miss Hamill was a member of the Repertory Society. Her parents were residents of Taihape for a few years. The Scarlett family owns two large jute mills, of which Mr Scarlett is general manager.

The monthly meeting of the artillery and divisional cavalry units of the Women’s War Auxiliary, 2nd N.Z.E.F., met in the social hall of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association on Thursday last. Mrs Bode and Mrs Withers entertained with songs and musical dialogues. A pleasant time was spent in the passing round of overseas photos. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, October 23, at 2.45 p.m. All interested are cordially welcome. Members of the Caversham branch of the League of Mothers spent a delightful afternoon on Wednesday last as guests of Mrs Orr Campbell. After the business of the meeting afternoon tea was served on the verandah. Mrs J. M'Cracken voiced the members’ appreciation of Mrs Campbell’s hospitality, and presented her with an azalea plant as a memento of the occasion. Mrs Campbell gave a very interesting talk on the various plants and shrubs, and pointed out some beautiful Vees which had been planted by Sir Frederick Chapman, who has collected them from various parts of New Zealand to plant in his home garden.

The prefects of the King’s High School held their .annual dance in the school Assembly Hall on Saturday eve" ing Inst, the visitors being received by the rector (Mr D. S. Chisholm) and Mrs Chisholm. Victoria League. At the monthly meeting of the executive of the Victoria League, held on Monday afternoon in the Otago Women’s Club, it was decided to hold the annual garden party in the Upper Gardens on October 31. Following the meeting, the president, Mrs E. C. Reynolds, entertained members at afternoon tea in the club lounge. Those present wore: Lady Sargood, Mesdames W. Laidlaw, A. G. Melville, J. P. M'Gowan, K. S. Ramsay, Gerald Fitzgerald, J. A. Jenkins, Garth Gallaway, A. N. Haggitt, and the Misses E. Jackson, M. Smith, A. C. Anderson, C. M. Cutten, K. Clapperton, F. Allan, P. Jones, and M. Macandrew.

Sawyers Bay Women’s Institute. The Sawyers Bay Women’s Institute held a most successful flower show and social on Wednesday evening last. Mrs Broadley welcomed friends and members of the institute. A “ back to youth ” competition caused great amusement and was won by Mrs King with Mrs Melville second and Mrs Broadley and Mrs C. Prattley third (equal). Mesdames Agnew, Broadley, Brownlee, M'Millan, and Nelson presented a play, 1 Gossip.’ Winners in the flower show competitions (kindjy judged by Mrs Brownlee) were: Anemones, Mesdames C.
