BURNSIDE MARKET

BEEF AHD mrm>H DEARER . ffhore waa a buoyant sale for beef| at the Bumskle market to-day, with- all* .classes of cattle appreciating. Fat sheep also: showed an improvement, but porkers and baconetrs on, the whole were easier.

The entry of fat cattle nusabered’SOfi,:, compared with 364 last week, with an ■ excellent showing of quality in sip classes, particularly in the ox section.» There were a number of pens of outstanding bullocks, these being mainly consigned’ from Stirling and Moa Flat. Two trucks on behalf of 0, Smail, of; Moa Flat, averaged £2l, while a truck from P. Anderson, Stirling, averaged £22. The market from the outset was firm, and there was spirited bidding throughout. On the average it could be quoted firm to 10s a head on prices ruling at the previous sale. Cows and heifers were also in keen demand, particularly light-weight heifers, the latter class showing an improvement of fully 15s a head. Extra prime bullocks made up to £23 12s 6d, prime from £l9 10s to £22, and best cows and heifers up to £l6 12s 6d.

A medium-sized yarding-of 120 store cattle was offered. Included in the entry were a few pens of well-hred three and four-year-old steers which met with good competition,'making up to £lO 17s 6d, and two and a,-half and three-year-old steers from £8 10s to £lO. Cows and heifers were in short supply, and sold firm at late rates; The entry of dairy cattle was small, numbering 20 bead. The quality was mostly inferior, this having an effect on prices, but anything showing condition and milking quality met a free sale at values on a par with those, of last week’s. Best cows brought up to £9.

In the fat sheep section a yarding, of 1,650 head comprised mainly ewes. Extra prime ewes were not present in the numbers offered at previous sales, this section being made, up mostly of medium sorts. There were a fair number of butchers’ wethers, however, witli a number of light fine wool sorts. The market opened firm for all sorts on prices ruling last week,. this being maintained throughout, and, if anything, showed a firming tendency as the sale progressed, hut over the last race there was an easing tendency, particularly in wethers. There were also a number of shorn sheep included, in the offering, which sold comparatively well. The top price for wethers was 41s. Prime wethers could be quoted from 35s to 37s 6d, prime maiden ewes to 34s 6d, prime ewes 26s to 28s 6d, and medium from 23s 6d to 2os.

Spring lamb comprised an entry of 34 head, compared with 18 yarded last week. The quality was again good, and a brisk sale resulted. 1 Owing to the larger number penned a; shading in prices ruling last week was reflected, being probably Is to 2s lower. Best lambs brought up to 43s 6d. Following are the estimates for beef a hundred lb and the prices a lb for mutton compared with last week’s rates:—

A larger yarding than usual of fat pigs, numbering 220, was forward. Although there were a number of prime quality baconers ; there was a larger offering of medium and plain sorts. Porkers were also forward in fairly large numbers of rather mixed! descriptions. Owing to the number yarded the demand was not as keen, and on the average pigs of all classes could he quoted from 5s to 6s below last week’s prices. Best baconers made up to £4 16s and porkers to £3 11s. Baconers could be quoted from 8d to B£d a lb, porkers from BJd to BJd a lb. The medium yarding of store pigs brought a good sale throughout. A good demand was evident. Weaners were keenly sought. Plainer sorts, however, did not bring the same demand. Good slips and stores made up to 325, and weaners from 22s 6d to 275.
