HANDICAPPING MAIDEN PERFORMERS South Island handicappors are very loth to lake any chances when framing their handicaps for maiden races. In the Trial Handicap, lo bo run an the opening day of the Dunedin Spring meeting, the handicapper has made a difference of only Sib between what ho considers the best and worst. Including the three unnamed candidates, four others, Boucant, Happy Feet, Helpmate, and Spot Cash, have been awarded 8.6 in a race in which the conditions provide for a 7.7 minimum. And ■it is interesting Lo note the performances of the others which have also been allotted this impost. Abdicate has started twice (his season, unplaced in both starts. Attorney raced once, this season, twice last season, all unplaced. Berrlma, four times last season, all unplaced. Chandelier three times last season, all unplaced. Decamp once this season, unplaced. Irish Ruler four times last season, ail unplaced. Lady Nuffield three times last season, all unplaced. Light Cavalry once this season, unplaced. Miss Sally once last once this season, both unplaced. Hoiho Tinopai five times last season once this season, all unplaced. Mae West once last season, om-e ihis season, both unplaced. Rink Dart throe limes last season, twice this season, all unplaced. Platform three times last season, all unplaced. Nihil six times last season, three times this season, all unplaced. Very Happv nine limes last season, all unplaced, and True Mate twice this season, both times unplaced. The handicap is Itcadocl bv Princess Myosolis (9.0), ■who. out of eight starts last season, was twice placed second and once third. Paper Whistle (8.11) was once third out of three starts last season and once third out of four starts this season. Overland Red i (8.10) had one start last season, unplaced, and finished third in a- division at the I Geraldine meeting last week. Kernal (8.9) j was three limes unplaced last season, and | out of six starts this season was only ( beaten bv a head over six furlongs by ) Silver Bail at the Christchurch Hunt meeti ing. and finished third at the Geraldine i nieeling last Saturday. A margin of 51b between Kernel and those on the 8.6 mark is ridiculous. It is always on the cards i I hat (here may be a “ rod in pickle ” j among t-lio unplaced performers engaged, I bul. nearly n dozen of those engaged in | next week’s race have shown no form lo warrant thorn carrying more than the raini--1 mum in any field. Owners and trainers i have the remedy in their own hands by refusing to start their horses under these conditions of handicapping, and clubs, in the interests of their patrons, should insist on at least fair margins being made in those races for maiden performers.
