Baklock's gymnasium, which was nued to tho third championship meeting that has been held by the Otago Association, and the president (Mr h. U Trewcek) said last night that although many of the best lifters wero ser\ing in the forces those who were left would do their best to carry on the game. Mr Treweek referred to weight-lifting, systematically carried out, as the finest body-building recreation there was, stating that many of the world’s greatest athletes had trained with the bars and bells. At the New Zealand championships in Christchurch at the end of this month. Otago would be represented, and a South Island interprovmcial tournament would be held in Dunedin on November 30. . ■ The championships last night consisted of the three Olympic lifts—two hands military press, two hands snatch, and two hands clean and jerk. Some of the performances were of an impressive nature, and_ D. Freeman, Otago’s most experienced lifter and holder of New Zealand records, had no difficulty in retaining his middle-weight title with a total of 5501 b, registering a particularly fine effort of 2201 b in the clean and jerk. His brother, F. Freeman, a very promising competitor, won the light-weight title with a total of 4951 b. The feather-weight class was, productive of very good lifting by J. Beveridge, whose total of 4401 b was an excellent effort for a man weighing 9.4. J. Johnston, who was the only competitor in tho heavy-weight division, shaped exceedingly well, being credited with a total of 5901 b. He is naturally adapted for the “ iron game,” and was one of the most promising lifters in action. Mr H. Bahlock was referee, Mr L. Green and Mr Xj. Monroe were the judges, Mr D. C. Bannatyr.o chief scorer, and Mr E. C. Treweek was the M.C. Results (two hands military press, snatch, and clean and jerk):—

by Te Mouanui from Palantua, and one. of P. Shaw’s team. Retired to the Stud. Winning llival, winner of botli < the M'Lean Stakes and the Dunedin Guineas, has failed to stand up to a further preparation, and has been returned to the Sloueyhnrst Stud. Inside Totalisator at Wingatui. The committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club lias decided not to erect railings to the selling windows of the inside totalizator bouse at Wangatui. The experiment of no railings tried at the Otago Hunt meeting proved a success. Meeting of Delegates. A mooting of delegates from all I lie racing and trotting clubs in the Otago and Southland districts will be held in Dunedin on Friday evening of next week to complete arrangements for the working of the tolalisators during the ensuing season. From a Speedy Family. The 'filly by Gustavo from Saxaphonc, which will race in .Mr L. C. Ha/.ieU’s colours, i., trained by A. H. McDonald. Her dam was by Nigger Minstrel from Compression, , by Tractor from Sister Radius, so she comes from a speedy family. Well Named. In the island of .Bali the . inhabitants are very particular regarding the colourline. This characteristic of Hie people of that island impressed Mr H. S. Macey on a visit lie paid to those parts, and on his return he named his Nigger Minstrel-Colour-lino colt after the island. Bali returned his supporters a big dividend at Geraldine last c ' , >turday.

Related to Nightbeam. Calypso, a double winner at the Geraldine meeting, is engaged in the Taioma, Handicap at Wingatui next week with 8.9 to carry. By Iliad, her dam, Lady Burleigh, is by Paladin from Tormentor, by Martian from the imported mare Torquato. Lady Burleigh is also the dam of Nightbeam, a winner of four races as a two-year-old. Parchment. Though he suffered a narrow defeat on the second day of the Geraldine meeting, Parchment would lose no friends for future engagements, and his strong finishing run stamps him as a game and genuine racehorse. Since he won at the Waimate Hunt meeting last July ho has started six times for a win and two-soconds. M’Lean Stakes and Dunedin Guineas. Only four horses have succeeded in winning both the M’Lean Stakes and Dunedin Guineas. They are Royal Stag, by Autumnus (1918-19) ; Winter Wind, by Antagonist (1919-20) ; Count Cavour, by Solferino (192324) ; and Winning Rival, by Bulandshar (1938-391. Silver Lily, winner of the M’Lean Stakes last year, holds a good chance of joining this select band this year. Man’s Pal. Messrs Timpany Bros., of Woodlands, have purchased outright from the late Mr George Kain’s estate the imported sire, Man’s Pal. An Australian studmaster was anxious to secure Man’s Pal, but as Messrs Timpany Bros, held him on lease they were given the preference by the sellers. Man’s Pal has the distinction of being the highestpriced stallion purchased south of Oamaru. Shortage of Light-weights. All of the trainers at Wingatui are short of labour in their stables, and tho few light-weight horsemen available are in much demand every morning to ride work. Their ranks have been further depleted by D. H. Hamit having gone into camp. Hamil, who still has a year of his apprenticeship to serve with F. Shaw, is such a versatile horseman that his services will be seriously missed at Wingatui just now. Southianders in M'Lean Stakes. Southland owners will be unusually well represented in the M’Lean Stakes this mouth. The breeding of the five two-year-olds engaged: Carolyn (Paper Money— Queen Astrid), Red Prize (Paper Money— Red Treasure), Winning Flight (Winning Hit—Francoliu), Macedione (Salmagundi — Honest Maid), and Saldowa —Mias Rcdowa). Palfrey Nicely Handicapped. Last year Doria carried 8.5 and beat a big and good field in the Air Force Handicap on the opening day of the Dunedin Spring Meeting. Then she went off colour, and Don’t Forget, to whom she conceded 141 b and beat by two lengths, gave her 51b next day and beat her by three lengths in tho Dunedin Guineas. Palfrey has been allotted 8.1 in the Air Force Handicap this year, and it should serve as a good trial for the mile classic on the second day. Ho appears to be nicely treated in tho handicap race.
