LOGAN PARK FIRE

UTILISATION OF INSURANCE MONEYS DRESSING ROOMS FOR CLUBS The utilisation of the insurance moneys available as a result of the Logan Park grandstand fire was tho subject of a recommendation of the Finance Committee at the fortnightly meeting of the City Council last night. Presenting the report, tho chairman of the committee (Cr W. li. Taverner) stated that insurance on the plant destroyed was £1,409 and £8,500 on the building, a total of £4,909. It was proposed to utilise this as follows:—Replacement of insured plant £2,517, of uninsured plant £lls, and the balance to be used for erecting a plant house and petrol store, plus, if possible, a a dressing room for the use of clubs and public conveniences, £2,277. The claim was not only the largest the fund had been called upon to meet, Cr Taverner said, but it actually exceeded the total amount paid out of tho fund since its inception, 21 years ago. The total to date was £3,896. Tho Reserves Committee considered the proposition as put forward would sufficiently cover the position at the moment.

Cr Cameron ; Is it the position that we are not going to build a new pavilion? The stand was insured for £8,600, but the bulk of this is being spent in other directions—on a plant house, petrol store, and dressing room. All agree that we cannot build a stand as big ns tho one destroyed, but nothing is left for the provision of a new one. Cr Jolly: Is it wise to build a petrol store where the public congregate? The Mayor; It will be a separate building. It is inevitable that the bulk of the money available must go in the purchase of plant. The grand stand destroyed filled a definite want, Mr Allen added, and the replacement by a new one would be considered later.

Cr Wright: I notice the report says a dressing room would bo built “ if possible.” I would like to see those words deleted.

The Mayor: There will be one._ Cr Jolly: Could not the primary schools’ sports be held on the Varsity ground? Cr Smith; They are going to be this year. Cr Taverner stated that with the sum available the first consideration would be the provision of a dressing room and conveniences. Very little use had been made of the old grand stand, and he took it that when a new one was under consideration it would not bo so big. When the Reserves Committee came to decide the matter it should consider the full utilisation of the ground. While a lot of money had been spent on drainage, much could be done in that direction in the future. This would be one way in which the ground could be made more popular.
