COURSING

NOTES AND COMMENTS [By Pldmpton.] Answer to Correspondent. Nightcaps Inquirer. The Courtney Browne" Memorial Challenge Cup iu 1940 was won by Messrs .Smart and Macpherson s Koval Ensign (Why Worry—Sultana). Mr J 'Webb’s The Jewel (Happy TornadoPresentation) was rumier-up. The latter led up and the points were 6-5. North Otago Fixture. At the coursing meeting held by the North Otago Club, when the J. R. Sewell Challenge Cup (open stake) and the J. Woodhill Cup (maiden stake) were decided, the length of slip was considerably shorter, but, as usual in Oaniaru, no kills were registered, although in almost every course ■there was plenty of , work after the first turn was scored. In fact, even better coursing was witnessed than at the Waterloo Cup fixture; „ _ Whining the Sewell Cup, Mr J. Webbs 1941 Waterloo Cup winner. Sergeant Major (Great Worry—White Gold) put up a great performance, eclipsing even his other whi. In the first round Sergeant Major completely outclassed Gold Reserve, leading up by over 20 lengths and working the hare with great vim and vigour; he won by Hi points to 1. To win the final course Sergeant Major led Nigger Boy up by 10 to 12 lengths and went on to win comfortably on a clever working hare by 7i to li points. Since his win in the Waterloo Cup Sergeant Major has improved in uace, and for duch a brilliant speedster his working ability when in on a hare has not been approached by any other performer on the North Otago enclosure In again being runner-up to Sergeant Major in the Sewell Cup, Mr J. Perkins’s dog Nigger Boy (Even Money—Gay Blonde) raced really well. He had no trouble in winning from Fair Odds by 9 to 3j points after leading up by three lengths and working well on a tricky hare. He is a good performer, but not brilliant. Nigger Boy has the advantage over many others because he has always been produced to race in first-class condition. In the Sewell Cup Mrs Hollow’s dog, Gold Reserve (Even Money—Wilga’s Lass), and Mr J. Jarvis’s Fair Odds (Even MoneyGay Blonde) raced very disappointingly. To win the Woodhill Cup, Mr A. Howell’s Fujiana (Satin Boy—Winiata), having her first race, put up a wonderful performance. In the first round she raced a natural bye, and in the second had very little trouble to defeat Red Ensign, whom she just led up. but the hare turned to favour Red Ensign. Once in on the game Fujiana was very clever, and won by 7 points to points. In the final coufse Fujiana again went well, and led Electric Flash np by two lengths to win comfortably by 4£ points to 1 point. Mr R. Fitzgerald’s dqg. Electrio Flash (Electric Blue —Paddy’s Lass) was runnerup, and raced very well for a dog so light in condition. Electric Flash shows great promise, but after performing well in the first part of a course has not sufficient condition, to carry on. Mr A. Smart’s dog, Royal Gold, raced very pleasingly for one so green at the sport. This dog should have a very promising future, especially in the care of Mr Smart. Mr G. Macpherson’s Red Ensign (Royal Ensign—Miss Gold), a brother to Royal Gold, also shows great promise, and was by no means disgraced when defeated by Fujiana. Mr A. Rennie’s N.S. Breechblock (Gilfillan —Divalex) was the biggest disappointment of the meeting. In a longer course he might have done better. The hare to which he and Red Ensign were slipped was very fast, and lost littre time in reaching jhome. The judging was again in the capable hands of Mr L. E. Webb, the club’s secretary, and the slipping was carried out by Mr F. Mitchell, under .whose presidency the club has had a very successful season. Two officials of the North Otago Club who are - deserving of special mention are Mr C. Cleverley and Mr L. R. Smart. Mr' Cleverley is probably the most successful trainer of hares in either Australia or New Zealr id. Mr Smart, a? call steward and a member of the North Otago Club’s committee, has given fine service to the club. .
