On the call of the chairman members stood in silence for a moment out of respect to the memory of the late Mr Joseph Mosley, a one-time member of the branch. A letter was read from the provincial secretary on the subject of training classes for shearers. The classes last year had resulted in 20 young follows of a very good type receiving training, the majority finishing up as full-fledged shearers. Ttyo provincial secretary wrote regarding Territorial camps, and it was stated that the earlier calling up of the men had caused difficulties on sheep farms, where lambing was in full swing. The correspondence was referred to the local Primary Prod action Council. A reply was received from the Associated Auctioneers’ Association regarding the branch’s request that the dairy cattle should be sold earlier in the day at the Balclutha sale. It was the association’s opinion that the dairy cows could be sold after the store sheep. It was agreed on the motion of Messrs S. Mosley and S. Willocks that the association be asked to start the dairy cattle sale after the fat sheep for the months of August to November, inclusive.

The provincial secretary wrote that the branch’s order for 10,000 .22 cartridges for rabbit shooting had been placed with Messrs Producers Ltd., but no indication could be obtained when delivery was likely to be made. ■At the sitting of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union on Saturday night the chairman road a copy of the Parliamentary Committee’s report received from Mr J. A. Roy, M.P., on the Rivers Control and Soil Erosion Bill, which has just become law. In the course of the discussion that followed it was stated that the Catchment Areas Boards it was proposed to form under the Bill would have power to rate landowners heavily, especially in low-lying levels like Inch Clutha, where extensive protective works might, be required. It was supposed to bo a national measure, but the Government had been very vague about the extent of the .State’s commitment in regard to finance. The genera! opinion seemed to be that the danger of excessive rating might easily nullify any good that might be expected to come from the Bill. MINIATURE RIFLES.
