SPRING RAGING

GERALDINE MEETING STABILISE WINS PRINCIPAL EVENT SHAM BOY BEATS STRIP As compared with the first day there was a big drop in the temperature for the second day of the Geraldine meeting on Saturday, and after the fifth race heavy hailstorms made the conditions, very unpleasant and seriously affected the totalisator investments on the last three races. NOTES ON THE RAGING Recollection was just over £2O better fancied than Ferriby for the hurdle race, with Flame Queen nearly as well supported. The race was a chapter of accidents, Gay Boa and .Ferriby falling at the first hurdle. Panara at the fourth, and Knight Commander at the last fence. Potent led Roddy, Flame Queen, and Ballyaggan over the early stages, but with seven furlongs to go Flame Queen took charge and at the far turn 'she was closely attended by Potent, Roddy, Knight Commander, and Recollection. Flame Queen was first into the straight from Roddy and Knight Coinmander and led over the last hurdle from Knight Commander, who hit it hard ana fell over the course railing. Flame Queen boat Roddy home by three lengths. Recollection was a length away third, with a big gap to Ballyaggan. . f Lord Dundas was at a short price for the Wainui Hack Handicap, carrying nea.il} £l2O more than Kernel, the second choice. Prom another bad start Bab, next the rails, and Kernel got an advantage and thev were followed round the far Turn by "Lord Dundas and Lady Nottava. Bali and Kernel were together turning for home. Then the former drew away, and ]ust lasted long enough to beat the favourite by a head. Kernel was a length away third ' a head in front of Lunaria, whofinished very fast from a long way back. Lady Nottava and Miss Rapaki were, next; Bold Sheila, who was not in-line when the barrier rose, dropped her rider shortly after the start. ■ . For the President’s Handicap Don t forget was made a good favourite, being over £llO better fancied than Stabilise. Last Refrain was slow to find his feet, and Stabilise led through the straight from GayParade, Cymric, and the favourite. On the turn out of the straight Don’t Forget took charge and led into the back from Gay Parade, Stabilise, and Cymric. This order was maintained until approaching the home turn, whore Stabilise had moved up to Don’t Forget’s quarters, and they were followed by Gay Parade, Cymric, St. Cloud, The Wrecker, and Prudent Prince. Before reaching the distance Stabilise, had the favourite beaten, and went on to win by three lengths from Prudent Prince, who finished very fast and beat Don't Forget by a head for second money. Cherokee 'was three lengths away fourth, followed by Cymric, Dictate, Iceland Spar. The Wrecker, and Gay Parade in that order.

Canister was over £IOO better fancied than Loyal King for the Domain Harness Handicap. Rainstorm led through the straight from Bright Lass, Canister, Bay Acron, Prosecutor, and Hoyden, and there was little change in this order as they raced along tho back and round the far turn. Going across the top, Rainstorm was still m charge from Bright Lass, with Canister moving up, and these three were followed into the straight by Swagger Jack. The favourite had taken charge at the distance, but was not able to hold off Swagger Jack, who heat him 1 ume ly two lengths. Free Bond was four irngihs away third, followed by Rainstorm, Bright Lass, and Knapdale Lass. Jolly Time was made a good favourite for the Gladstone Hack Handicap, carrying nearly twice ns many investments as Sir Gundi, the second choice. After a long delay at the barrier a fair start was made, and Gold Don, Military Maid, and Atreus were the first to show, but after a furlong had been covered Military Maid and Force were racing just clear of Atreus and Jolly Time, with Grey Night and Gold Don next. This order was not changed until after the straight was reached. Then Grey Night joined Force, and inside the distance looked a winner, but Calypso and Good Scout put in their claims, and in the best finish of the meeting Calypso beat Good Scout, by a head. Grey Night was half a length away third. Only heads separated Force, Military Maid, Atreus, Hurry Girl, and Jolly Time. In a six-horse field for the Stewards’ Handicap Strip, who had a 71b allowance, was made about £SO better favourite than Sham Boy. Strip and Sham Boy began the smartest, and at the end of a furlong Sham Boy drew out clear. He was two lengths in front of King's Toast and Strip racing across the top, and was a similar distance clear of Strip turning for home, with King’s Toast next. In the run to the post Sham Boy held off Strip and beat him by a good length. King’s Toast was two lengths away third, with a big gap to CraigIca and Boloyna.

Tho Winchester Harness Handicap was run during a heavy hailstorm, that made visibility bad. Festivity was nearly £3O better fancied than Countless, with Sandiways nearly as well backed. Lyrola loci through the straight, from Lunch Hour, Bedrock, Trevathan, Rev Bonny, and Colleen Travis, and as they turned into the hack stretch Bedrock ran to the front and led Colleen Travis and Sandiways to the far turn, where Countless moved up into fourth place, alongside Sandiways. Colleen Travis just headed Bedrock turning into tho straight, two lengths clear of Sandiways and Countless. Sandiways was the first io head off Colleen Travis, but, finishing strongly, Countless beat Sandiways home by two lengths, with Colleen Travis a head away third. Then there was a gap of a dozen lengths to Hamarfast, with Festivity, Bedrock, and Diviner next. After his easy win on the opening day Parchment was sent out an odds-on favourite for the South Canterbury Champion Hack Handicap, hut after having every chance in the running was well beaten by Ackemma, who took charge early from Bright Form, Foxefte, and the favourite. Parchment followed Ackemma into the straight, but the latter hung on too well and had just a head to spare when tho post was reached. Bright Form was three lengths away third, with a similar gap to My raid. , OHINEMURI JOCKEY CLUB ERLICH AT LONG ODDS Tho Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting at Paeroa was opened in dull, showery weather, but the track was in fair order. The attendance was good, and tho tntalisator handled £30,644, against £37,610 10« last year. Concluding results;— N GATE A HANDICAP, £2OO.
