Messrs J. D. Revie, Jasper Clark, and W. K. Cameron left to-day for Wellington.

Hon. M. Connelly, M.L.C., Hon. T. O’Byrne, M.L.C., Invercargill, and Mr W. Denham, M.P., Invercargill, were passengers by the through express today on their way to Wellington. Mr Charles Ramsay, of London, left-to-day for the north on the first stages of his journey home. Mr F. Goodwin was a passenger by the express to-day on his way to Wellington. Rev. W. A. Hamblett travelled by the through express to-day en route to Wellington. Regimental Sergeant-major _J. M'Knight, of the 4th Battalion, National Military Reserve, has received notification of his promotion from warrant officer, second class, to warrant officer, first class. At a meeting of the Dunedin subbranch of the Otago Educational Institute, the president, Mr Thomas Wilson, referred to the death of Mr H. A. Betting, who had throughout his teaching service been closely associated with institute affairs, and a tribute was paid to his sterling character and his high teaching ideals. A _ resolution of sympathy with the relatives was passed. At the annual meeting last night of the Otago Justices of the Peace Association regret was expressed that the oldest member of the association, Mr F. W. Knight, was at present laid aside by illness. The registrar (Mr G. Stratton) said that Mr Knight, who was appointed, in 1884, was the oldest justice of the peace in Otago, and the second oldest in New Zealand. The newly-appointed_ Chief ,of the General Staff, Brigadier E. Puttick, D. 5.0., who has been serving in the Middle Blast with the New Zealand forces, is expected to return to the Dominion early next month. An announcement to this effect was made last, night by the Acting Prime Minister, Hon. W. Nash. The return of Brigadier Puttick to take over his new duties will make no difference to the position of General Sir Guy Williams, military adviser on loan to the New Zealand Government. Sir Guy is preparing a report for the Government on the military defence of New Zealand, and -his work is not yet completed. Mr Henry Barnett, who for the last three seasons has been manager of the Goodwopd dairy factory, has been appointed manager of the Cam dairy factory at Rangiora. The selection of Mr Frederick John Lock as the National Party candidate for Nelson electorate was made last night at a meeting of party members. Mr Lock is a tailor by trade, in business in Nelson. The other nominee was Mr F. E. Nottage, of Tasman. —Press Association.

Private advice has been received by Mr S. E. Griffiths, St. Clair, from his son. Padre R. J. Griffiths, who was reported missing after the operations in Crete, that he is well, and carrying on his chaplain’s duties in a hospital in Greece. In his letter Padre Griffiths says there are a number of New Zealand doctors attached to this hospital and' also quite a lot of New Zealand wounded soldiers.
