KNITTING WOOL
DIFFICULTIES OF MANUFACTURE (P.A.) WELLINGTON. August 20. Addressing the annual meeting of the Wellington Woollen Manufacturing Company, the chairman (Mr Barber), in referring to the vexed question of the shortage of yarn for home knitting, said the mill had made as much as possible without slacking on military orders, and actually the turnover for domestic wool was two and a-half times greater than in 1910. There were now eight mills supplying the Defence Purchase Board with J0,4001b of knitting wool a month. This was allocated by the National Patriotic Committees to women knitting for the A.N.A. It would bo possible in normal times for Now Zealand mills to cover the quantity of wool formerly imported for domestic use. but Government orders for uniform doth and necessary civilian
requirements had to take precedence. Pointing out the difficulty already experienced in manning mills, Mr Barber scouted the idea that 24 hours a day in mills was possible.
