DEATH OF COLONEL PIERCE
GENERAL FREYBERG S TRIBUTE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 20. The Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) has received the following from Major-general Freyberg:—“ It was with deep regret that we heard of the death of Colonel C. J. Pierce, who commanded the Divisional Cavalry in 1940. Colonel Pierce was a great cavalry leader, and an excellent judge and trainer of men. He breathed life into the regiment and built up a fine spirit. When he was stricken and had to return to New Zealand, he accepted his fate like the brave man he was. Our loss is great. He would have been an intrepid leader in the war. He will always be remembered with affection by everyone who knew him.”
