HILLSIDE APPEALS
MINISTER'S COMMENT NO WORK FOR CASUALS AT PRESENT (Special.) WELLINGTON. Aug. 20. The attention of the Minister of Railways (the Hon, R. Semple) was called to the apparent anomaly of the department appealing in Dunedin on behalf of two boilermakers employed at Hillside, though it had recently dismissed 22 casual boilermakers. “ The reason for the dismissal of the casuals,” explained Mr Semple today, “is that there is no work for them in the railways workshops, but this is the first break they have had for years, and there is little cause for complaint. Later on, when the preliminaries have been completed for the construction of trawlers and minesweepers, there will be plenty of work for boilermakers. We want all the men of that trade wo can get in the Dominion.”
