GENERAL ELECTIONS
DUNEDIN WEST CANDIDATE LIEUTENANT-COMMANDER CONNOLLY LABOUR'S CHOICE NATIONAL PARTY'S NOMINATIONS As a result of the largest postal ballot ever conducted in Dunedin in such a connection, Lieutenant-commander 1. G. Connolly has been selected, subject to the endorsement of the National Excoutive of the party, as the Labour candidate for the Dunedin West seat at the forthcoming General Election. More than 1,500 ballot papers were distributed in the electorate, and the overwhelming majority by which Lieutenant-commander Connolly was selected is considered by members of the party to be indicative of the result at the poll. Other nominations for the seat were Messrs R. Walls, B. O’Donnell, W. B. •Richards, and E. T. Cox. The scat is at present held by Dr D. G. M‘Mil I an. In the other electorates the sitting Labour members will again stand—the Minister of Defence (Hon. F. Jones), for Dunedin South, Mr P. Neilson, for Dunedin Central, and Mr J. W, Muuro, for Dunedin North. • Lieutenant-commander Connolly entered civic politics in 1938 when he contested a by-election for a seat on the City Council. In the elections held this year he topped the City Council poll when his candidature was unopposed by the Citizens’ Association. He was at one time president of the Otago Labour Represntation Commitee, and was employed at the Hillside Workshops until lie went overseas on active service early last year. As has been already announced, Lieutenant-commander Connolly will be returning to New Zealand in December of this year to take up a new position, the nature of which has not been disclosed.
NATIONAL PARTY NOMINATIONS. The National Party is also preparing for the forthcoming fray, but with the probable exception of Dunedin South it is hot possible yet to state who is likely to be standing. Nominations for the Southern electorate closed last night, that of Dr S. Moore being the only on'o received. Subject to the approval of the Dominion Council of the party, he will bo the candidate. Nominations for the Central electorate close to-night, and the name of the Rev. E. P. Aderman is mentioned as being a possible candidate for selection here. Mr Aderman,-it will be remembered, contested the Duuedin South seat last General Elotion. For Dunedin West nominations close on August 9, and Mr E. J. Smith, at present a Citizens’ Association representative on the City Council, is suggested as a likely nominee. Nominations for Dunedin North close on August 11. It is known that one of the nominations is that of Brigadier A. S. Falconer.
