ONEKAKA IRON
GROWN ACTION AGAINST COMPANIES FORFEITURE OF MINING PRIVILEGES INVOLVED (P.A.) NELSON, July 29. - A preliminary action in connection with the Onekaka iron industry, which may he followed by a claim. for compensation in the Compensation Court later, was commenced in the Warden s Court to-dav before Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M. ... ' ' ' The Crown is bringing an action tor forfeiture of mining privileges against the Onekaka Iron and Steel Company Ltd., the Golden Bay Proprietary Ltd., and Pacific Sffeel Ltd. The Crown alleges that the defendant companies had defaulted by not complying with the terms of the mining licenses. The conw panies are seeking a ruling whether the mining privileges were liable to forfop tore and whether they are entitled to proceed for compensation under the Iron and Steel Industry Act, 1937. The Act provides for the payment of compensation for certain mining privileges taken over by the Government, but with the condition that no compensation is to. be paid for any privileges if the warden, in appropriate, proceedings, would have made a decree or forfeiture of those privileges in Mareh, 1935. Eight counsel, including the SolicitorGeneral, Mr 11. H. Cornish, are engaged in the case.
